FS And Gamers

Wed Oct 12, 2005 3:50 pm

There is a large thread on tech/ops about FSers landing a real aircraft.

Well would gamers make good soldiers because they are very good at killing things........

Gamers would make the worst kind of soldiers. War is not a game, and its nothing at all like a video game. To have people joining the army thinking it is such and with that sort of mentality is very bad. Being a soldier is more than just having the ability to kill people. The modern soldier IMO has to be the following as well as just good at combat:

- Have good communication skills
- Be able to speak foreign languages
- Have the highest respect for human life (i.e. understand what their role is as a soldier)
- Treat the enemy with respect, honor, and dignity (strangely enough)

Now I've never been in the army, so if our soldiers are already like this, then good.

But video gamers as soldiers, no thanks.

I have this sneaking suspicion that most of thier hearts would explode when they tried to hump 100 pounds of gear and their weapon across the worlds most cracked out places to walk.

redflag  That's like saying gays can't be good souldiers... don't Generalize!! You should also consider Googling the subject as IIRC the Military was turning to the FPS community for people who has good shoot/not shoot reflexes which those games are GREAT at duplicating.

Your thinking is sort of limited... yeah if you take joe gamer 'addict' who just loves the idea of killing, you are absolutely correct. But If you have a kid who's getting good grades in school and only plays an hour or so a night, they could become very effective, especially if they are athletic.

If you talk about a textbook gaming nerd, sure. But you might want to watch www.tomshardware.com for their gamer convention coverage.... IIRC that there are always a few guys who look like they could hold their own... along with a LOT that couldn't.

Multiplayer FPS games are used to review scenarios and teach team tactics. Like FS, which can help train certain aspects of flying (like cheklists and equipment scan), Gaming isn't as far removed from military applications as one might think. Hell, 'America's Army' was comissioned by the military.

KROC trained with a game called 'America's Air Force' to learn to sit in a building, jot down notes about the weather, eat Combos, and swig 'Lite' beer. He couldn't have done it without video game technology.

In fact, here's a screenshot of "America's Air Force," The game with which KROC trained for duty:

You left out the pivitole role email plays in the Air Force as well. besides, I see nothing wrong with having a fridge full of beer for every shift!  Wink

Although I'm sure that if the need ever arose where the government needed 20,000 or so simple design T-Shirts stamped out, LHMark could put his work experience to good use. Nothing as challenging as lining up the yellow "F" the "B" and the "I" letters all in a row on the black T-Shirt.
