The Life And Death Of Belfast's 'Doris Day'.

Thu Oct 13, 2005 4:53 am

Doris Day? American movie star of a bygone era?
What's she doing in Belfast? She's dead?

No to all of them, 'Doris Day' was the nickname given to a 'Loyalist' paramilitary thug.

It wasn't a term of affection.

So why do we want to read about this character?
Well, even by the often eccentric standards of Ulster paramilitary, this story is bizarre to say the least.

Tragic for his late son, tragic for anyone who crossed his path, but I could not help thinking someone should, after a decent period, make a film of this, if nothing else to show the utter futility of what these people were about.

You might argue a fictional version has already been made, Resurrection Man, in the late 1990's.
Set in the mid 70's, loosely based on the 'Shankill Butchers', this intense, creepy film showed these 'Loyalists' as little more than psychos with more access to lethal weaponry.
But I found the coke snorting and bizarre occasional costumes in the film, a bit unrealistic, (this was meant to be the 1970's in Ulster), but this film pales compared to the real life story here;

Bizarre indeed. What I found most offensive was the fate his son met.
Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

Yes, apart from his other activities, what happened to his Son might have fuelled more resentment towards him.

Lording it over some of the most poverty stricken parts of Western Europe, whilst he swans off abroad and flaunts his ill gotten gains whilst at home.

Think a mix of (low rent) Scarface and every bad 80's pop video.
