Another 'good Catholic' Gone Bad: Martin Holmes

Thu Oct 13, 2005 5:27 am

Before you start throwing Cargo bays, the 'celebrity' of this story is only a mechanisim to discuss the real issue of religious intolerance getting in the way of a positive family life. I don't care so much about Tom and Katie, but this exhibition of intolerance is unacceptable.

Katie’s dad furious about shotgun wedding
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9546108/
"Katie Holmes’s dad is said to be “very upset” because his unmarried daughter is pregnant with Cruise’s child. And, what’s more, the devoutly Catholic Martin Holmes reportedly is none-too-thrilled about his daughter’s involvement in her husband-to-be’s controversial religion, Scientology."

This F-ing Moron who's so wrapped up in his religion that he can't see that his grandchild is going to be one of the richest, most loved (presumably) children on the planet?? Why can't he just say, I disagree with the means, but I support my daughter and her husband to be 100%?????

Well, I agree with you that people take religion WAY too seriously. From reading this article, it sounds like her dad could stand to calm down some.

On the other hand, I view scientology to be a generally destructive cult and would not be happy if a close family member were to be caught up in it. Mind you, this is not because I do not advocate religious freedom, but because I would be worried that the family member may be harmed (emotionally, financially, physically, etc...) by their association with the cult.

In the case of Ms. Holmes', the scientology-endorsed idea of not allowing anyone to touch a baby for the first 7 days of its life also seems like an unsound and harmful idea to me, although once again since it probably does not fall under the category of "child abuse," it should be left up to the parents. (It is my understanding that babies and young children thrive on and begin to understand the world primarily via touch.)

What really irks me about it is how their private business gets out in the media and becomes everybody's business. I do not think that celebrity worship is a worthwhile activity, nor does it meet my definition of "news". If a reporter was prying into a private (family) situation involving me, I would pull a Dick Cheney on them (tell them to go ____ themselves). Nevertheless, I am sure that some relative or bystander would dish out the dirt anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter what the actual involved people do.

Unfortunately most fathers see their daughters as 'property', someone they can try to control and not as a normally sexual human being. Ms. Holmes father is also worried about the relationship of his daughter with a much older, divorced man, how the child will be raised as to faith, particularly in the controversial Scientology 'faith' and of the psycho media attention their relationship has already got and will get with a child. Ms. Holmes is very much an adult at 27, but was also very irresponsible to not use or have Tom Cruise us birth control. Why don't the media pay more attention to more important issues affecting all of us - who gives a Flying Foot about these celebs.

That's another good point. I know a few people whose fathers think like that. It's a pretty sick way to act in my view.
