The Good Old Days? No Way!

Mon Oct 17, 2005 2:02 am

1985: return flight Dublin-London could be had for as little as IR£120 (€152) + taxes.

2005: return flight Dublin-London can be bought for under €8 + taxes.

1985: the first mobile phones went on sale, costing IR£1,395 (€1,771). They were the size of a brick and could only be used within a 25 mile radius of Dublin.

2005: Now they almost give them away.

Any other comparisons as good as that?

Internet fees.

Nowadays I am paying 9,99 EUR every month for a DSL flatrate, I don't know how much I paid a few years ago but it was much more.

- Cars: 5000$ cash back offers were unheard of in Switzerland 10 years ago

That's more like it.  Wink Even though you do of course pay for the phone via the contract.

People who fondly remember the "good old days" often seem to forget that most things they liked back then do still exist, and they can be completely oblivious of the progress that's been made.

Well in the "good old days not that long ago" atleast you could gas up a sled at 69.9 instead of this 119.9 we are paying now... And airport security wasn't so damn picky... And the mountain biking trails weren't being paved over... And a pic on a.net wasn't so close to impossible...

No, just 3 or 4 of the really heavily used "mulituse trails" in Whitehorse, as well as ripping out the trees and parking houses on several more popular mountain biking trails. I've whined before and will continue to do so, it pisses me off so much.

I never thought I'd ever say this, but I think that almost might be a good idea.

1985 - HIV was a death sentence.

2005 - HIV can be effectively managed with antivirals and people are surviving for decades.

Means a lot to me as I bumped into an old mate last night who was honestly at death's door some years ago, but is looking great today on combination therapy.

Parking fine:

1985: DKK 100 (€13)
2005: DKK 510 (€70)

Today it is often a more criminal act to park your car ten minutes overtime than to break the scalp of an innocent man.
