Mercosur Expands: Venezuela Is 5th Member

Mon Oct 17, 2005 5:11 am

It was announced yesterday that all 4 MERCOSUR members had agreed to allow Venezuela to join as a full member. The original MERCOSUR is made by: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay.

Now that Venezuela's has joined this "customs union" I can't see where Venezuela is heading regarding regional integration. The Venezuelan Govt. proudly announced last month that starting Dec 15th 2005 we would start using Andean Community passports and now we join MERCOSUR. By joining MERCOSUR we have to set our tariffs to MERCOSUR standards, but we already have our tariffs at Andean standards. I wonder how this is gonna work out. I personally see more future in the Andean community which in my opinion is a stronger bloc with defined institutions (Andean Parliament, Andean Court of Justice, Andean Secretary) than MERCOSUR. Aviation-wise we have a working Open Skies agreement in the Andean Community, which MERCOSUR lacks.

Comments are welcome!

Intersting News, I had not heard about this.

Considering that Chavez seemed to pursue stronger ties with Caribbean nations (subsidised crude oil deliveries) and Cuba (closer political ties with the "revolutionary brothers") in the recent past, I am rather surprised about these closer ties with the Mercosur countries.

Could this be part of a longer term plan to reduce Venezuleas dependence on the US as a major trading partner ?

Wow, and we are still not sure if Argentina is a member of Mercosur Big grin

I agree with you, the Andean community even though economically is much more modest than Mercosur seems actually a more serious endeavour. What is Chavez, thinking, I don't think anyone knows.

The fact of the matter is Mercosur's two biggest countries actually compete for the same capital in many areas, that is why it never could have worked and I've been saying this for eons. Argentina is incredibly luke warm on Mercosur, and Venezuela's entry really means little to Argentina's economy because the two countries don't really go head to head in the same economic areas. Supposedly by know there was to have been a free trade area of the Americas, and look how marvelously that has worked out!  Wink

I think the future is NAFTA & CAFTA, the Caribbean-US trade zone, the Andean Community, and other agreements between Chile & Uruguay with the US. Argentina wants nothing to do with free trade with the United States.

There hasn't been any news on this locally. Please can you provide a credible source? Also, doesn't the Sur in MERCOSUR mean South? I don't see how Venezuala (North) fits in this picture although they do have influence in Bolivia.

Me neither. It is quicker for me to fly to Toronto than to Buenos Aires. This is the result of left-wing politics.

It really doesn't matter if it's 'Mercosur' or 'Comunidad Andina'. The most logical thing is that in some years all North, Central and South America will be in the ALCA. Until then, the existing blocks will get stronger in order to obtain benefits in the final integration negotiation.

But really it is a good news. Felicidades.

Agur,
