What Does It Mean To Be Normal?

Wed Oct 19, 2005 5:26 am

Just as the title states....what does "acting normal" mean to you?

When I mean normal, that is not to be confused with "civil"-such as not farting in church or peeing in the lobby of a 5-star restaurant. For example....a person that swallows 18" swords for the circus or still swears by the merits of reel to reel recording can hardly be described as normal.

Likewise, if you have a head, all 4 limbs, no visible skin anomalies, or what have you, you are considered normal. Where does it go from there?

Someone who walks around talking to the trees or calling the police because they think the laugh track on the TV sitcom is actually laughing at them clearly is NOT normal. Again...where do you draw the line between mental illness versus simple recluse?

On the other hand, someone who says "like" in every other sentence or follows every entertainment or fashion trend, listens only to whatever Top 40 songs are popular at the moment, well, to me, that is just mindless conformity. Yet that person will blend totally into society.

Taking your Honda Civic.....and "sprucing" it up...with tinted windows, a large coffee can sized exhaust pipe, and splashing a bunch of decals on it, you think you are showing off your "unique" personality.....until you realize that everyone else driving a "spruced up" Honda has made essentially the same modifications. Your "unique" car has about 4 million lookalikes out there.

What about cultural differences from different parts of the world? For example, in parts of Europe, it's considered normal for women to sunbathe on a public beach sans top. Here in the US, such behavior would get you cited and possibly jailed. Yet movies or TV shows without strong sexual overtones are virtually guaranteed to be financial flops; todays Hollywood can take a story about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and work a love/sex scene into it.

Likewise, in France (even Italy too if I'm not mistaken), I am told that it is customary or normal to serve your children wine with dinner.

Here in the US, that's a great way to get cited with "contributing to the delinquency of" and not only gettin arrested, but losing your kids to the State as well.

Yet go to any bar or nightclub, show me the one person who doesn't have a beer or mixed drink in hand, and I'll show you someone who everyone else thinks is from Mars.

You get the idea.

What do you consider "normal"?

Just trying to start up a new topic. No ulterior motive here.

One example:

Referring to 'ricing-out' as 'sprucing'

NOT normal

normality is what you define it as--and most commonly it involves ideas, actions, or behaviors not quite unlike your own.

ie "normality" is boring.

I have a bumper sticker on my car that says "250 LB. STEAM" and I think this is perfectly normal.  confused

Seriously though, I don't place a lot of importance on defining things in general as normal or not normal. Plenty of things that are normal are bad, and plenty of things that are not normal are good, so who really cares?

"Normal" to society is not noticeably standing out from the majority of those around you, so normality itself will change as you change locations.

Normal means you pretend to believe in god even if you don't. If you admit to believing only in reality you are shunned as a freak. If you weren't brainwashed as a child, you can't be normal. Sorry.

Europeans / Aussies are not that hung up about alcohol served to kids. My mother would always have some table wine with dinner when we were growing up. We were allowed a small glass and that was it.

Same when I was a teenager and we had parties, liquor was allowed and supervised only because our parents knew we'd get it from somewhere anyway.

Getting trashed on liquor on your 18th birthday used to be an Aussie tradition because you were legal. But most kids here have had alcohol by the age of 14 yrs.

Your right though, what is normal? I consider myself part of normal society even though I'm gay and have an affliction for Teddy Bears.

I think the perception of 'normal' is one who "CONFORMS" to societies NORMS. Like get married, buy a house in burbs, get your squaw inpregnated and buy a locally manufactured Holden or Ford car.

But in contempory Western societies we see loads of differences to the norm - so to speak. I think not-normal is anyone that doesn't conform to you specific set of ideals and morality.

I know gay guys that call you abnormal if you don't sleep around with half a dozen people a week! Each to their own.

Normal is a term used by the 'majority' that implies you are just like them. It is technically and purely perceptive, meaning everyone will have a different idea of normal per person based on their experiences in life. But, as the saying goes:

A vast majority of people actually believe that whatever they think is the way things are (mainly because those beliefs have not been challenged, or that every instance that people try, they ignore). Hence, it is their perception that things are right or wrong, they cannot really prove anything due to their ignorance on the subject matter. Besides, it is very difficult to genuinely inform ourselves on something we think is wrong or we claim to hate? It's gut wrenching!

I don't think people are entitled to an ignorant opinion. In terms of normal: f*ck those who say you are this or that because of what you did or said, they think they know enough*...of which some have already posted in here.

* They based their critisism of you on their past experiences with other people; not you. They don't know you and feel they don't need to because of other people. Hence, they are ignorant. I don't see the logic of the ignorant making the decsions on what people get to be. I do sadly see the logic of majority rules, it shouldn't apply but it does.

There is no actual definition...in fact, I don't think normality could exist. Afterall, aren't we all different? If no two people are they same, how there be a class that defines how people "should" be?

Evryone on of us consideres ourselves "normal", very few would admits that he or she are abnormal. So in my opinion we default to considering others like ourselves "normal. "

I also think that there is a "normality spread". And that spread depends on what you are talking about, situation and the observer

For example:

Pants are worn on your legs. If you put them somewere else on you it is not normal, - Very small spread of normality

Hair Color - Black, Blonde, Brown and red. - Normal, Wider "normality spread". Now if you are in (sorry for sterotyping) china and there is a blonde oriental, then it is less normal.

wearing a tutu everyday - not normal (unless you are a ballet dancer, then it is normal); wearing a tutu on halloween - normal.

Celebrating Thanksgiving in the US - Normal; in Japan - Not normal.
