Asia Quake Death Toll Up To 79,000

Thu Oct 20, 2005 11:08 pm

The death toll is up to 79,000. This is pretty horrible, they're not getting the attention that they need from both the rest of the world and the media.

It seems that after all the natural disasters we have had recently, there is finally some donor-fatigue setting in, as people want to hear some positive news once in a while (unfortunately they wont get these by focusing on US domestic policy, inflation or the stock market either)

If only there had been a few hundred foreign tourists in that country, then the situation would have been entirely different.

Kashmir could maybe be a wonderful tourist resort. But as a 50 years old war zone between two nuke countries...

The rich world's stock of emergency equipment has been used up by the Tsunami, Sudan war, Katrina and such, and they wait for a new fiscal year 2006 to get funding released for building up stocks again. In the meantime thousands of people may suffer or die because the outside world didn't react in time.

And now Wilma is threatening. Wilma gets a lot more press attention here than the earth quake.

I think that HAJFlyer is absolutely right. Donor fatigue has set in.

Ugh, don't even get me started on the avian flu. On last weeks Science Friday with Ira Flato (sp?), the Director of Infectious Disease Research and Policy basically said that its no longer a question of IF there will be a flu pandemic, but when it will happen. And apparently that seems to be the consesus among most scientists investigating it. Will the world be ready to handle it after the Tsunami, Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Flooding, etc. etc. etc. Are we too drained from those?

And all the U.S. is talking about is military quarantine, that frightens me.

Just think, the government is pulling back on funding for the Katrina disaster.

That's what happens when your only funding comes from speculation and is tied up in the pockets and back accounts of the top 10% of the wealthiest country in the world and its corporations.

Just wait until the next tragedy happens in the US, or something to do with the oil supply, probably an attack in Saudi Arabia. Can you say, worldwide economic disaster?

That's what happens when we put the "me first" attitude above morals as Americans has been doing for generations
