Fall YYZ Meet

Fri Oct 21, 2005 9:30 am

Hey there, well it's getting to the point where Ontario is starting to cool down real fast, and i was wondering if we're gonna have another meet before the zero temps come in.....the last meet in july was pretty good and it'd be great to recreate that this time around if we can. I for one am all for a fall meet....anyone else?????

Cheers

Well, that makes 2? Anymore takers? I was thinking of either 1st or second week in November, obviously sat/sun. I know it's short notice but this time NUNO needs a break from organizing everything.....oh yeah, i believe MATTRB owes me a rye and coke! Oh wait, i think Nuno does too, lol.

Well - I'll keep watching the posts. A little jaunt to TO for a weekend is always a good thing. I'm really busy at work right now so it may be impossible but we'll see.

I mean - I would find it hard to miss a meal with my good friend SS. Will we be driving around in that huge American car? Wait a second - I never did get a ride in it. Nope - I was with George and Naomi when it came to transportation (thanks again G).

Alright - keep me informed about the plans.

Cheers!

Right now the dates are open...i'm just tossing an idea into the wind and seeing where it takes me. Wilco can make it 19th/20th possibly, AC777 can make it possibly that time too....JAG and me whenever and Curtis is a maybe for anytime, so if a few hours when others have replied i'm sure we can get a better understanding.

Guys - post some ideas for dates. I'd likely be up for a two-day deal (arrive early afternoon, depart the following evening), assuming there's beer involved as well. The $$$ will depend a great deal on whether we're talking Friday-Saturday, or Tuesday-Wednesday; also I need two weeks lead time to book a decent fare.

So for now i'm going with these dates, maybe tomorrow when more ppl have read this post we'll have a better idea. Oh, Logan...where i'm involved there's always BEER  Smile

Cheers

I could make it on a weekday, but I wouldn't be much fun after dinner since I'd have to work the next day. Weekends are better.

AC777LR: Jordan, I don't think there's enough time for Nuno to plan something for next weekend. Besides, it's Hallowe'en.

Stu, sounds like a good idea.

However that weekend is right before Thanksgiving Break. I am not too keen on driving to TO and back, then turning around and driving down to DC a few days later. And to needlessly complicate things more one of the early weekends in November I am in Buffalo for a conference.

Though I suppose you could do this w/o me.  Wink

Hey, what's the public transportation situation from YYZ to Toronto hotels? Should I stay near the airport, or downtown? Airfare and hotel look like $400-$500 for these two days. I can do that, but, I'd like to be closest to whomever might be driving for spotting and/or beer (read: dinner).

RJPieces and I stayed downtown at the YYZ meet this summer, but I can't remember the hotel. Getting to the airport was easy, if a bit time-consuming. Getting to the spotting location (Wendys) by public transportation was very time consuming, but still manageable. Getting to the other spotting location (near the hobby shop) would be pretty difficult without a car, if memory serves.

We stayed downtown because we wanted to see the city (we stayed two extra days). If you're just there for the meet, your best bet is probably the airport.

As for me, I'm certainly up for it, if fares on Westjet are low enough.

Well, Phil (Wilco737) has already arranged for me to help him pick a place to go globe trotting with him on that week, so if he ends up at YYZ then I will be there too! (we would arrive in business class (hugely discounted), of course, as befits our status.  Wink)

So convince us! Is Toronto in November still a great place to consider a 3 or 4 day break?? (Airfares pending!)

Guys, I know this is a month away, but if I'm going to make plans, I'd like to get things rolling. Right now it looks like Sat Nov 19 and Sun Nov 20th. Can anyone make this a set date? Also, I asked whether I should stay near the airport or in the city. There are price differences, and it looks like YYZ isn't terribly far from from downtown.

I'd need some idea of public trans portation to spotting areas/city areas/hotel, and/or a good proximity to some generous A.netters who might be able to shuttle people to spotting and beer. I'll be doing this for the Oct 28-29 BOS meet (well, on Saturday afternoon anyway).

Thanks!

Last I checked, fares were 107 CAD roundtrip on Westjet from YWG, which is low enough for me to consider it.

Anyone know any cheap hotels near the airport?

Well, you can count me in to be there and help out with our visitors and their transportation needs.  Smile I can't say that I'll drive everybody everywhere, but I'll help out wherever I can! To those that are worried about this being an issue, trust me, it wont be.

Capital146, sorry, no Brits allowed!  Wink Nah just kidding, that would be cool if you guys made it out here! To be honest, the spring is a better time weather wise, but it might not be too bad in November.

April, you wont do a red-eye flight? Not even for meeeeeeeeee? You GOTTA come to the meet, even if just to ensure that I don't smoke too much  Smile

It's always a nice surprise to see how everybody gets long, and how diverse the group really is. I'm looking forward to another meet, even if I don't spend nearly as much time as I ordinarily would have in the past. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and Stu, I'll buy you a drink for sure! Cheers!!!

Okies, well it looks like we've got a good showing happening here!

Logan22, last time i was at YYZ i stayed at the Days Inn on Airport rd, and for the night it ran me just over $100CDN. Nice hotel, good pool apparently ( i heard all about it), and the meeting places were'nt too far away. Of course, my services as a chauffeur are always available, so like Nuno said, getting around isn't a problem....altho the weather might be, lol.

Phyllis.....how much do i owe you for sayin all those things about me? It's got to be time for me to pay my tab!!!

Logan, I'll say downtown....the reason being is that alot of YYZ'ers etc don't stay the 2 days or can only make 1 day, which means there's a limited turnout on the 2nd day usually. So, it's 50/50......stay near the airport and you'll meet up with ppl both days, more on the 1st day than the 2nd i'm guessing. Stay downtown and you can do the touristy thing on the sunday, or see if anyone's at YYZ for the sunday.

Cheers

I think I may be flying in on Thursday evening, November 17th and staying till Monday morning November 21st. That Sunday (November 20th) is my birthday, and I would like to spend it with my girl in Cambridge. If we do a meet that weekend, I am sure I can find some time away (particularly on the Friday when she is at work) to hop a VIA train into Toronto, Greyhound or perhaps rely on Jordan's kindness to give me a ride (no pressure  Silly) Anyway, if it is that weekend, I am in.
