What Is In The Boot (trunk) Of Your Car?

Sat Oct 22, 2005 3:02 pm

Old, cheesey but worth a hit:

In mine there is a First Aid Kit, a Coat (with NZ fern symbol) and a large box with 3 tins of paint in it.

A pair of socks.

I'll play along. In the Mercedes, my usual car, there's a combination tire pumping gadget / emergency light, a blanket (rolled up with a strap around it), two Rubbermaid bins for corralling groceries and packages on the way home from the store, and a Vancouver map book. In the Integra, there's a box that came with the car that contains a small flashlight, tire gauge, and a book about the car. Also a bungee cord. I think that's it.

What's up with the cans of paint, Jafa?

In the boot itself, a CD stacker that I only discovered 9 months after buying the car  spin , and a few uni folders. Under that is the spare tire, car jack and tools, and an emergency tourch and simple tool kit.

I don't like to carry around a lot of stuff in the trunk that flies around during spirited driving (gotta love those BMW suspensions  Smile), therefore I usually only have an umbrella, a first aid kit and a spare wheel in there.

Nothing whatsoever apart from the manufacturer supplied toolkit and space saver spare wheel.

I'm a city dweller so there is no reason for me to be carrying anything else. Junk in the boot means less usable space and fuel used carrying it.

Forward trunk: Starter battery, 1 quart of oil, one long funnel, one rag, the front license plate, two or three spare hubcaps off a wreck. (they are very small) Jack and tools.

Rear trunk: The cloth covers for my T-tops. One ice scraper.

Glove compartment: Owner's manual, proof of insurance but no registration, flashlight and a pair of gloves. (Imagine - gloves in the glove compartment!)

Center console: Charger for my cell phone. Fire extinguisher.

Pocket of driver side door: Military-issue-style AO sunglasses. Phillips screwdirver that has not found its way back to my toolbox yet.

No spare tire. No CDs. No survival kit because, unlike my friend up north, survival is not an issue here OR this car stays in the garage.

1991, Mk II turbo. Probably two hundred thousand miles. (Don't know, I scared the speedo to death four years ago.) Hard miles! I used to wear out tires at the rate of about a dollar a day. I don't do that anymore. Smile

There are Ferrari 308s and Mondials on eBay that are in my price range but in many respects they would be a step down from the MR-2. They will always get more respect but my car is easy to get serviced, reliable, inexpensive to maintain and no particular vandalism risk. Ferraris are none of those things.

I just can't find anything I like as well to replace it.

Thought about getting a Cobra replica with a small engine, like a 302 Ford. Plenty of power and it will never go out of style. My problem is not much hearing left and skin cancers. Both those things argue against roadsters.

One of my ex-coworkers looked at building a Cobra replica. The kit he was looking at took a mid-80s Mustang engine. Really interesting concept. I think he eventually decided against it mostly because of the age of the engine.

I love that body style of the MR2. Always wanted one. When I got my first job out of university and needed my first car it was 1996 and the MR2 had just finished production a couple of years ago. We thought about buying a used one but decided to go for the Integra instead. That ended up being a good choice - absolutely reliable, and with the hatchback it has a ton of room. I've moved house with the Integra twice and also brought home a six foot tall cat tree in it.

One of my neighbours has a real Cobra. That thing is loud! He only brings it out on fine days. The family owns a local Ford dealership and the Cobra was his dad's.

Lol - well you never know when you might need them!  Smile Very handy for seeing over airport fences and something to sit on when you're at East Midlands waiting two hours for the next arrival!  biggrin

    Cheers,
    Noel.
