Anyone Up For Mojito's?

Sun Oct 23, 2005 10:08 pm

So, its Sunday night here in Melbourne... I have had a big weekend with my good friend Ron Bacardi and the drink aptly named the "Mojito."

Has anyone got any awesome rums or anything which I can try subsitute Bacardi for?

Also, I am wondering who knows the perfect way to make these suckers and where can I get a good muddling stick?

Aside from that, who wants to come down to MEL and mix up some drinks?!  Wink

It's a beautiful night to fly like a phoenix...

I'm so there! The upscale department store Nordstrom had this neat event that was a private shopping event to launch the Swell line of books. They had manicures, palm reading, live models, all kinds of fun stuff. But the best part was that they had an open bar with mojitos. Very smart on their part. I came out of there with a new skirt and shoes that I never intended to buy.  Smile
But that was when I ruled the world

I use pure cane sugar to make mine. Don't go light on the mint leaves either.

Cheers

Try Havanna Club, in my opinion one of the best rums!

The Mojito is a Cuban drink that many have tried to imitate but few succeed, so I can only recommend that if you want a real Mojito, then La Bodeguita del Medio, Empedrado 207, Habana Vieja (Old Havana) is the place to drink them. It's a place made legendary by Hemmingway. (I assume you know who he is)

Here's the Exact recipe from the back of the T-shirt from La Bodeguita del Medio

1/2 cdta de azucar
El jugo de limon.
Un ramito de hierbabuena.
Majelo bien hasta que suelte el jugo.
Dos cubitos de hielo.
1/2 onza de Havana Club Silver Dry.
Soda hasta colmar el vaso.
Revuelvalo bien.

--------------------------------

In English and to help you out, here's how to make and enjoy a great Mojito.

Highball Glass

Ingredients
1 shot light rum.
For the authentic Cuban Mojito cocktail we recommend
3-year-old, or silver dry, Havana Club Rum.
Half a teaspoon of sugar
Juice of half a lime
Sprigs of Mojito Mint - crush stalks (not leaves) to
release essential oils

Method
Add all ingredients, fill glass with ice cubes, top up
with soda or mineral water, and shake or stir well.
Decorate with a sprig of Mojito Mint.

Notes on the mint.
Yerbabuena, is the name of the Cuban variety of mint
that gives a Mojito cocktail its distinctive subtle
flavour. Nothing can compare with the flavour
Yerbabuena gives to the Mojito cocktail. Yerbabuena
has a mild sweet flavour, and a light and heady
fragrance.

Simply wonderful and refreshing on a hot day, of which
there are many in Havana. I've enjoyed a lot of them at La Bodeguita.

LOL Monteycarlos. If you've spent as much time as I have in Havana, well let's just say that more than a few Mojito's have passed my lips. Damn, when it's 34C and 90% humidity, it's amazing how much fluids you have to drink to remain hydrated. Big grin Big grin Big grin

One nice thing, customs in the US never give your booze a second look, technically Havana Club is just as forbidden as Cuban cigars but it's just not on their radar. Also, last time I was in Quito it only cost about $2.50/bottle!

I'm also partial to Cacique from Venezuela.

Thankfully we have several local bars that know how to make these wonderful drinks.

So what other drinks should I be trying?  Wink I'm not sure there are many latin women here in MEL.

Actually, another good one from your area(don't know if they do a light but the dark is good) is Bundaberg. Oddly enough, I have actually changed planes in this airport/shack.

My experience with the OP is that after a few I can still drink quite well, it's thinking that can be a bit of a problem.

Havanna is even more  yummy  than Bacardi. This is one of the drink where you taste the difference!

Whack in the fruit, leaves, sugar (in that order) followed by the juice/soda and the rum. Then... using a swiveling motion while you crush, use that stick to mix it all up. Jesus it's 9:30 in the morning, I am at work and now I want one of them  Silly

Quoting Monteycarlos (Thread starter):
and where can I get a good muddling stick?

You can get them in the supermarket. If you don't find one specific to cocktails (which I doubt), you can get one from those garlic pressing bowls (or even nick one from the chemisty lab at school or uni if that's an option  Wink )

Is that an invitation!?  innocent  Big grin
Not drinking, also isn't a solution!
