Microsoft Antispyware

Tue Oct 25, 2005 12:28 pm

Maybe someone can help me, Microsoft Antispyware is detecting a adware called Virtumondo. Now I think I removed it correctly, but then on the next scan the same adware will be detected.

Am I not deleting this adware right? Maybe someone can explain how to delete adware using Microsoft Antispyware.

Try "Spy sweeper". You can google it and download a free trial. Also
you may try doing spyware while in Safe mode.

Bullshit. Ad-Aware doesn't catch the same stuff MS Antispyware does. Too bad the things MS does catch I can't get rid of (unless I go in Safe Mode I suppose).

But hey, I reformatted my HD the other week. Once I got Windows (SP1) up and running I opened up IE and went to download Zone Alarm and Firefox. Before I was done doing that my computer was already infested with spyware and my browser got hijacked. Got rid of most of the spyware (using SpyBot, AdAware and MS), but IE won't open anymore (except the occasional random pop-up ad. Go figure). Oh well.

Windows Update turned out to be a POS too, after a few days of fruitlessly trying to get the thing to download SP2 (instead of 30 trivial updates at a time), I resorted to just downloading a copy of the SP2 installer manually. It had to be an "illegitimate" copy off a file sharing network, because microsoft.com wouldn't let me do anything other than say "go use Windows Update" (which is harder than it sounds considering my IE doesn't work and the WU page is only accessible with IE) great customer service there jerks. They're lucky I'm not MattD, or some emo kid with a blog.

Something is wrong. When I go into safe mode all I get is a black screen with the words safe mode in each corner of the screen.

One more thing, has anyone been able to any updates for the Microsoft Updates site? I keep getting a 0x80072EFD error.

My computer auto-updates using the Windows update site. It just finished updating without any problems. I guess windows update is working ok.

MS Antispyware is pretty good, my computer has been spyware free since I've been using it, but don't rely on it entirely though.

Re boot your machine, and download the latest definitions for Antispyware, and run the program again. See if that works.

That is not good. Are you sure you are booting in to Safe mode with Windows?

Excellent advice. I use multiple anti spyware packages on occasion as backup and MS Anti Spy all the time.

Booting to a blank screen does not sound good. I do not know what to tell you.

Safe mode runs you in a basic VGA setting, at the lowest resolution, depending on how your desktop is arranged it can move your icons off the screen. Do you have the button? Can you do and see the start menu?

If none of those work you may have a problem, but the fact that you see 'Safe Mode' in the corner tells me you've got the OS up.

Last option, while still in safe mode, try the three finger salute , this will bring up Task Manager, from the menu select File, New Task (Run), then run MS AntiSpyware (path should be C:Program FilesMicrosoft AntiSpywareGIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe). Then reboot normally.

Good luck
