White House Waste Of Time

No, this isn't a jab at George W.'s politics, but rather why the White House would worry about something so benign:

"The site's chief editor, Scott Dikkers, replied with scorn at the president's "paying lawyers to protect him from comedians".

He better have his lawyers standing by for a bit more serious work in the next few months.  Big grin

Well it is a copyrighted seal, although such programmes such as SNL use it frequently on television. So I don't really see the point of it.

I didn't think such shows use the actual symbol, but a pseudo-symbol.

Does "West Wing" use the actual symbol?

Yes, which is why The Onion should have sought an exemption, but the White House even worrying about it is silly in my opinion, especially with the rationale that illegal use of the seal falsely indicates an endorsement.

All U.S. Federal Gov't employees have strict rules about when & where symbols of the agency may be used. One rule is very explicit about not even giving the appearance that an agency is giving endorsements.

Imagine if you will the outcry if a placebo drug company started using the FDA symbol in it's "$153 a bottle diet supplement" ads or if a local political candidate used the White House seal in an ad. To make the rule simple for everybody to follow the gov't just jealously guards all it's symbols and marks. Makes good sense if you think about it.
