AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- A fire broke out at a detention center at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport overnight, killing 10 people and injuring 15, Dutch police have said.

A police spokesman declined to give further details before a news conference due to be held at 0430 GMT.

The Dutch news agency ANP said the death toll could rise. The fire began shortly after midnight and was brought under control only several hours later, it said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The detention complex mainly houses suspected drug traffickers, the police spokesman said.

ANP said 350 people were being held in the complex at the time of the fire.

There's a lot of drugs being smuggled into The Netherlands in places where the sun doesn't shine... I wonder if some of those people actually started the fire themselves (generally detainees are not a happy bunch...)

I heard the news, too, but CNN said so little, so I thought it must be something in the cargo area or some of the restaurants, just like it happened in Dusseldorf few years ago.

It certainly is a huge number.  Wow!

Could it possibly be the result of some kind of riots in prison?

BTW... This 'prison' is on the outskirts of the airport, near the old Fokker factory. Not very near the centre...

11 die in Amsterdam airport blaze

27 October 2005 07:20
Dutch police say at least 11 people died and 15 were injured in an overnight fire at a detention centre at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

The fire began shortly after midnight local time and took about four hours to bring under control.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

A police spokesman said the detention complex mainly housed suspected drug traffickers and others awaiting expulsion from the country.

Reports say 350 people were being held in the complex at the time of the fire.

I guess someone was trying to destroy some evidence.

Probably not. The cells of the detention center are occupied by maximum of two prisoners. Which is already quite exceptional for Holland, because detention centers used to have 1 person in 1 cell. But the cause of the fire is still uncertain.

The part of the prison which caught fire had 24 cells and this night it housed 43 prisoners. The 11 victims were all 'persons in foreigner detention'. (www.nu.nl)

In fact it is at the other side of the runway-terrain and not or almost not visible from the terminal. From the terminal it should be something like a 15 minute drive all the way round a part of the airport runways and hangar-facilities.

It is probably just in the forum because this 'news' came from CNN with AMS & 'fire' in one headline.

When I saw the place going up in flames, I immediately thought of the Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House."

Watch out, you might get what you're after
Cool babies, strange but not a stranger
I'm an ordinary guy
Burning down the house

Hold tight, wait till the party's over
Hold tight, We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house

Here's your ticket pack your bag: time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far, Maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire

I am surprised that so many people are detained (350+) at the facility at the airport. Does the Netherlands keep all those whom are being detained for attemped illegal entry or with counterban at that facility, no matter where in the country initially detained?
While most of us would like some 'real justice' come in the way of death to those involved with high level illegal drug and other crimes, it is still wrong for this situtaion to have occured. I would suspect that most there and were killed were/are people desprite to leave their home countries for political and economic reasons, including not having enough income for them or their families survival. I would assume that a through investigation will be done to determine the source of the fire, and how to prevent such a horrible event happen again.
