Sulu..... I'm Gay

Fri Oct 28, 2005 9:34 pm

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

Takei told The Associated Press on Thursday that his new onstage role as psychologist Martin Dysart in "Equus," helped inspire him to publicly discuss his sexuality.

So what ? This should definitely by a non-issue.

He made the right decision by no longer hiding his sexual orientation especially after living with a partner for 18 years.

Seriously, it should have been obvious.

Kirk nabbed every single piece of intergalactic booty they encountered, includeing their very own Uhura.

OK...now...there's something newsworthy. Discuss that.

Considering Takeis character was the only one whos career really advanced, he got his own ship, I wonder if the producers were pushing an agenda?

Kirk = Made Admiral, then got demoted back to Capt.
Spock = Sometimes diplomat, sometimes spy, never got his own ship - always ended up doing Kirks (or Picards) bidding.
McCoy = Retired and recalled to duty back on Enterprise. Finally made Admiral some 75 years after he was on the first Enterprise.
Scotty = Retired as "Capt of Engineering" on Enterprise, never having left the ship apparently.
Chekov = Last seen as Staff Officer on Enterprise-B then off to obscurity.
Uhura = After she kissed Kirk her career skyrocketed to the floor. Last seen announcing "Channel open Sir".

So a gay Sulu getting his own ship would have done pretty well considering the dismal careers of his peers. See, "don't ask, don't tell" works!  Smile

In another episode (might have been from Charley X, Season 1 not positive), wasn't Sulu doing some swashbuckling in an attempt to defend Uhura's honor?

Pretty hard for them to do that since he's just now telling the world this.

Again, this is pretty much an non-issue, except to the homophobes of the world.

One slight flaw with that theory... at least with the Sulu character (not Takei himself); early on in the film, Star Trek Generations, Kirk learns that Sulu has a daughter (it's assumed that she's not adopted due to the resemblance towards her father). She's the one at the helm of Enterprise B.

Actually the original series started runnin in 66, so it has damm near been 40 years now.

If he had announced, actually 40 years ago, He would have been the guy that beamed down to the next planet they visited wearing a 'red shirt'.

Of course this was the TV show that had the first iinterracial kiss, so who knows. But I don't think they would have gone so far as have a bedroom scene as William Defoe did in Boondock Saints.

Actually in 1966, he would've died in an 'off camera' landing party the very next episode. NBC would've dumped him so fast it would have made Warp travel look slow. It would've been nice if Sulu could've come out 40 or even 30 years ago, but in the entertainment world, it was next to impossible.

So true. I remember seeing a stand-comic doing a routine involving Star Trek red-shirt unknowns back in my college days; it was hilarious.

BTW, in the earlier-mentioned Mirror Mirror episode; the parallel-universe Sulu is wearing a red shirt.

careers. Chekov was the first officer on the ship at the beginning of Wrath of Khan
So a gay Sulu getting his own ship would have done pretty well considering the dismal careers of his peers. See, "don't ask, don't tell" works!

They all got promoted, and asked for continued duty on the Enterprise to the detriment of their own , SPock was captain of the Enterprise at one point, and became a senior ambassador within the Federation. Scotty went as high as an engineer goes and ended up retiring and getting caught in a transporter feedback loop outside of an artificial black hole and was rescued by the Enterprise D crew. I don't know what happened to Uhura, but I'll bet she was pretty well set up. Admiral McCoy was head of Star Fleet medical before retiring to teach at Medical School and consult for Star Fleet when needed.

It was good for all of them.

Dang, reading the Trek History on this thread is like reading world history on the rest of A-Net . . . . lots of made up shit.

DL021 and L-188 come closest to reality . . . .

Quoting SATL382G (Reply 9):
Kirk = Made Admiral, then got demoted back to Capt.
Spock = Sometimes diplomat, sometimes spy, never got his own ship - always ended up doing Kirks (or Picards) bidding.

Chekov = Last seen as Staff Officer on Enterprise-B then off to obscurity.
Uhura = After she kissed Kirk her career skyrocketed to the floor. Last seen announcing "Channel open Sir".

Kirk: After being reducede back to Captain having saved the planet Earth- AGAIN- (ST4, The Voyage Home) takes command of Enterprise A and off they go. Finally retired, and killed on Enterprise B (but not really, he was transported to The Nexus where he meets up with Picard), and then killed in a fist fight with Dr. Sarin when a gantry collapsed.
Spock: Last seen on Romulus inciting riotous behavior amongst the Romulan separatists. Did in fact have command of Enterprise when it was assigned to Star Fleet academy as a training ship (ST2, The Wrath of Khan) and then thy had to go kill Khan - same movie where Spock coined the Phrase "The good of the many outweighs the good of the few or the one", and same movie where Spock gets killed, only he had placed his Kahtra (brain waves I guess) into McCoy, and winds up being alive . . . again.
Sulu: Wound up in Command of Excelsior and comes to the aid of Enterprise A in Star Trek 6, The Undiscovered Country where Sulu and his ship have just completed a 2 year hitch as "Master of this Vessel" (Excelsior). Last seen heading off into the sunset (so to speak) on Excelsior.
Chekov: Last hitch was Head Navigator on Enterprise A. Retired and brought back for the launch of Enterprise B, same time Kirk was killed (or not killed). Final rank was Commander.
Uhuru: After a million repetitions of "Hailing Frequencies Open, Sir" she taught at the academy for a while and then retired . . . into obscurity not to be seen after Star Trek 6.
McCoy . . . . evidently, he picked up some kind of longevity bonus somewhere because he was still alive and kicking when Enterprise D was launched. He pissed off a bunch of folks on Enterprise D cause he refused to use a transporter and they had to send a shuttle to get Admiral McCoy to come visit the Enterprise D Medical Facilities . . . same episode where McCoy met Mr. Data, the android helmsman on Enterprise D.
Scotty: After Enterprise was retired he was reassigned to Excelsior when it was preparing for Space Trials. He was promoted to Captain. He sabotaged the Excelsior engines when he reported aboard and prevented the capture of Enterprise when it went after Spock. He retired and was heading off into the sunset when his ship was caught up in the gravitational field of a Dyson's Sphere and it crashed on the surface. Just prior to the crash he tried to escape via transporter only it didn't work and he was stuck there - having set up the Transporter as a Life Boat of sorts - where his ships energy kept him "alive" in the transporter circuits until rescued by Enterprise D. After a bit of time on Enterprise D, he hauls off across the galaxy in a Shuttlecraft.

I could go in to more detail, but I just woke up . . . . you get the idea.

Sulu's daughter is Dimura, and she is the Chief Helmsman of Enterprise B. Introduced to Kirk by Chekov . . .
