My local news station did a little story on this program, so I decided to download it and try it out, and it's really neat!
I actually think it's better than Google Earth in some ways, though its real disadvantage is that the program is slow loading and takes a lot of connection speed to download the imagery, but once it is downloaded, it's worth it.
You can get Landsat7 imagery, USGS topo maps, rendered terrain, bathymetric relief...you can even see hurricanes and weather fronts that exist right now on the earth!!
It's also got the moon. You can go to the moon in this thing and explore impact craters and ridges and other things. It's really neat.
Some features of Google Earth are superior, and certainly google earth is more user friendly, but Worldwind is pretty amazing. I now have them both on my computer. Worldwind also has an advantage in that it's 100% free, you can add addons or develop your own to enhance the program, you can even add planets to it like Mars developed by 3rd party developers...its all open source. You can really customize it to encompass a lot.
If you want to try it out, you first download Version 1.3.1, then download the "blue marble" update set, that upgrades it to version 1.3.3. Read the online user manual and before long you'll get the hang of using it.
What do you think?
Here's the link to it, have fun exploring this cool program.
