Buying A 19" LCD Monitor - Any Recommendations?

Mon Oct 31, 2005 11:10 pm

Well, I finally ordered my Mac Mini, and am now looking for a monitor to go along with it.

The things I'm sure I want:

- 19" or larger flat-panel LCD screen

- Response time of 12ms or lower

- A price of $350 or less. www.newegg.com seems to have the best prices so far.

The things I think I want:

- Brightness...300 cd/m2 or brighter

- Contrast Ratio...500:1 or better

...Of the two here, which should I put more emphasis on? I won't be gaming, but I like nice, crisp displays.

So far, I'm comparing the Samsung 915N, the Sceptre X9G, and the Hyundai B90A. If anyone can offer any advice, such as which brands to avoid, features to look for, places to shop, etc, I would really appreciate it.

If you have relatively good eyesight, I would recommend trying very hard to find a monitor with higher resolution than 1280x1024. I have a 17" LCD that runs at 1280x1024 and while it's alright, I often wish that it could go a little bit higher. But if I had a massive 19" display, I know I would really want more "desktop real estate" than 1280 can provide.

If you don't want it known, don't say it on a phone.

Go for the Dell widescreen series, they are very very good and worth it for the small amount extra you will be paying.

I just had to replace a CRT monitor and went for a 20" TFT. 19" would have been sufficient size-wise, but I wanted more than 1280*1024 resolution which isn't available in smaller sizes.

It does depend on what you're normally doing with the system, but higher resolution is almost always a good idea. It is obvious that you should use the digital DVI connection for a TFT.

There are TFTs with higher contrast levels, but my current one (PHILIPS 200P, 1600*1200) offered the best compromise on price, performance and general quality. It has zero pixel defects resolution and I'm quite happy with it.
