Vasectomies!

Thu Nov 03, 2005 11:56 pm

So, who wants one?

Who has had them done?

Who SHOULD get one performed?  Wink

And for those that have had them done, have you ever considered getting a reversal?

I have had the snip job. Thinking two kids was enough. Now after some time, i must admit and i'm somewhat embarassed to say, i am considering getting a reversal done.

I haven't had them done, but I have "done" quite a few while in general surgery (fun operation to perform, the snip snip job)  scared

I don't think you should be. Many people go through that - divorces, new partnership. The one thing you have to keep in mind, though, is that the process is somewhat different this time:

1. much lengthier surgery (microanastomosis)
2. cannot be done in an outpatient setting (at least in Germany)
3. Success rate is somewhat limited (this is the major problem)
4. costlier than the vasectomy per se

Otherwise, it is pretty much a straightforward procedure, not too much trauma involved.

Good luck when you decide.

Cheers

You are asking if one can still perform after the snip job?

Answer, oh ya. No problems what so ever. The plumbing still works. I must admit i was a little weary having sex for the first time after the operation. I had this crazy thought of my balls exploding or something like that.  Wink

Much more fun, no worries except that if one were to change partners or (heaven forbid) stray away from home, you would need to really try hard to remind yourself about safe sex as when in a long term relationship it is too easy to forget that kids aren't the only hazard related to unprotected sex!

Well, didnt happen to me thankfully but a couple of friends of mine... the story goes like this...

Group of lads were out at the pub playing pool. These two guys were on the table and (remaining anonymous) Dave and Jason placed a £10 wager on the game. So, these two guys are playing they're about 3/4 the way through a game when its Daves shot, he has to reach over the table and whilst he is bent over the table, jase decides to "nudge" daves nackers to make him miss... Only in his drunken state, he didnt "nudge" them, he whacked them full pelt with the butt-end of his cue. Dave dropped like a bag of spuds and blacked out. An hour later he comes round but then we notice he's bleeding in "that area". Cue a trip to Casualty where the doctors spend four hours attempting to save dave's testicles unfortunatly they had to remove one of them or should i say "It had already been obliterated and they just removed chunks of it". And replaced it with a rubber one to make it look like he had two.

From then on he was known as One Bollock.

And he still had to give jase the tenner for loosing the game...  Wink

ouch

Ok, Ms G as you so clearly get off on the thought of men in agony.....

I had mine done at the Marie Stopes clinic in central London, it wasn't so bad but you had to sit in a room with a ghetto blaster chained to the wall playing some godawful "New Age Muzak" that sounded like souls in torment..bad start...then there was an all-pervading aroma of singed flesh permeating the building.

The op was no biggie except for the nurse, she was obscenely pretty and stood there mopping my brow (I was sweatng like a good 'un) and watching my knackers being re plumbed with interest.

Then they gave me a handful of pills, I put on the very tight pants they advised me to bring, grabbed a cab to the tube station (oops, bad pun) and headed off to Canons Park which is about as far north as you can go on the underground.

BUT there was a hold up on the tube so the journey took ages longer than it should, so that the pills had worn off well before the end of the trip, every bump felt like I had cannon balls attached to my bits and there is an extremely bumpy piece of track just before Canons Park!!

Eventualy I got off the train and, grasping the handrail, biting my lip in pain I eventualy made it down the stairs to street level.

To get to my house from here was quite literally (under normal plumbing conditions) a walk in the park, 4 minutes tops.

I shuffled across the park, very slowly, like an old man of 90, every step, every puff of wind a blinding paroxysm of pain, I cursed, I sweated, I shuffled and after 20 mins i made it to my front door.

I opened the door, yelled "Drugs!" to Mrs J and collapsed on the sofa.

I didn't have any nasty swellings i'm sorry to say but the pain was excrutiating..until the co-proxamol kicked in.

Anyway, I hope your twisted sense of humour is satisfied for now.  Smile  Smile

The worst pain was the Betadyne antiseptic on a freshly shaven nut. Afterward, I kept a cold "Big Gulp" between my legs for several hours. After a day or two, the incision begins to heal and itch. Don't scratch! My doctor snipped, tied, cotterized AND put titanium clips at the ends. Those clips get between the thighs sometimes and pinch. Your nut turns black, then returns to normal color after a few days. It was worth it for me.

Interesting.

Actually, I found out two nights ago that my dad had one when I was in seventh grade.

I had no idea!! My sister was in fourth grade at the time... and she knew the entire time! I was completely surprised! I was kidding around with her a couple nights ago saying, "Yeah, I'll bet they'll have another kid when we go out to Catalina over Christmas." Yeah, then she told me what she knew. I can't believe I didn't know.

Disgusting and completely uncomfortable. I can't believe this subject came out now! Wowwww.... weird and sick. I love my dad, but you can bet I'll be joking around with him over Thanksgiving.

Good for you. Yet, it is still the most common reason for a vasectomy reversal.

1. I've heard about 4 hours
2. hmm...general Anesthetic I presume
3. 50 % is that correct?
4. How much do you charge?....is It worth a trip to Germany? Seriously I have heard of rates beween $5,000 and $20,000.

1. Depends on the skill of the surgeon and the technique he will employ: microanastomosis (lengthier) versus Stent (problems with foreign-body rejection). It is about right.
2. Not necessarily. You can have an epidural with a catheter that enables the anesthesiologist to "fill up" as the surgery goes along. General anesthesia is always an option, depends if you have any additional health problems.
3. That is an average. Some people claim 90% (I can't believe that), some people report bad results. It is still a procedure that has an inherent risk of failing.
4. I cannot perform that surgery, I am a pediatric surgeon (I did the Snip-Snip surgery while training in general surgery). I can, if you wish, ask some colleagues in the urology department and check the prices. If those are US$, then it might be cheaper here.

I am in Germany. My wife and I were both born in Brazil, yet we are also italian citizens (long story) and live now in Germany. She is joining A.net too and threw a Fit when saw a german flag in my name.

You don't have to be afraid of epidurals! They always give you a little anesthesia with lidocaine before the "big" needle gets in. Hey, we do that in children oft - they complain much less than adults (actually, they are already sleeping when we do the puncture)...

If the figures are Canadian $, then maybe the procedure may be a little more expensive in Germany. You would have to pay a lot before actually getting admitted, and then they would charge you for everything - since you do not have an insurance card from here. But still, I can look if you want to.

Cheers

I highly doubt that i will go there and getthe procedure done. Although it would be interesting to compare costs. Don't knock yourself out, but, i appreciate the offer .

I have an appointment with my GP this coming Monday to get more information and i've also tracked down a surgeon who does the procedure. The Dr. is in our neighborhood...how convenient.

I'll temporarily suspend my A.net retirement to chime in here...

I've encouraged anyone considering the procedure to go for it since mine back in 2000. Really wasn't a big deal; a few pinches thru the anesthetic during the procedure, but that was about it. I drove myself home and got a bag of frozen peas on the boys before the anesthetic wore off. I never had too much pain down there except for a few sharp pains about a month later, but that passed. I had a cold when I got snipped, and to be honest, I was more uncomfortable with that than my sliced nutsack.
I did, however get divorced in the past year, which puts a whole new spin on the subject. Perhaps children will be important to the next Mrs. 4holer (if there ever is one!) and I need to understand that I may need to attempt the reversal. Not only the pain of the operation, but kids! (I'm less opposed now, though that is something the ex and I agreed on.)
But even considering that, I still say do it. The sooner the better. It's no big deal.
Back to the A.net retirement home with me now!
