Laying Laminate Wood Flooring

Sat Nov 05, 2005 12:17 am

I am in the process of laying some laminate wood flooring in the bathroom and toilet but laying it around the lav is going to be a nightmare.

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to do it easily?

Laminate in the bathroom. Hope it's waterproof.

One way is to attach a pen or pencil to a ruler and use it to draw a line on the back of the laminate by following the profile of the toilet with the other end of the ruler. Remember that by drawing on the back of the laminate you have to use the laminate on the opposite side of the toilet.

Plan B. Raise the toilet so the laminate goes under it and you don't have to cut it.

Plan C. Unscrew the toilet from the floor and loosen the cistern, slide the laminate, or a piece of paper/cardboard under the toilet, draw the profile of the toilet base on the paper/laminate/cardboard, then remove and jigsaw the laminate to the profile of the toilet.

Plan D. Use floor tiles.

Take the toilet out when you install the flooring. Just make sure the flange will have enough clearance when you put the toilet back on.

Make a template of the toilet.

Cut planks using the template.

Caulk around toilet and plank junction to make sure that when you over shoot while taking a drunk piss, nothing gets under the flooring.

I'd use ceramic in a pisser, or at least VCT.  twocents

i hope the "planks " you are using don't have a "v" grove in it as this is a place for nasty things to collect. And there are nasty things is a crapper.

Other words for toilet thread helped with this post.  Wink

This is precisely the best recommendation. We were doing laminate, but went with tile instead. Tile sucks, BTW.

Laminate and hardwood is much easier to install, but be sure your floor is level. Use a high quality underlayment as well, and preferably something that has some shock absorption qualities to it.

For the toilet, take it out, plug the hole, measure enough clearance around the wax plug, lay the flooring around it appropriately, and then put the toilet back on top of it. That's it in very basic terms.

Remove the toilet. Cut floor covering to match the flange. Install floor covering. Clean the flange and install new wax ring. Reinstall toilet.

This photo shows a cement board underlayment, but think of it as the actual floor covering material and you'll get the idea.

One hint:

Always store the laminate boards horizontaly. Never lean them against a wall, else they will surely bend and produce an uneven floor.

So true.

...and let the boards acclimatize to the environment in which they will be laid for about a day.

As others have mentioned above, there are several ways of doing it.
However, there is only one right way. Remove the toilet.
Depending on the thickness of the flooring, you may also have to raise the flange.
What ever you decide to do. DO NOT seal around the toilet. The wax ring is the only seal you should use. If there are any leaks under there, you want the water to run out so you know that there is a leak.

Yes, as said above, regardless of the flooring material used, this is the only way, it is easier than you would think but wear rubber gloves and try not to inhale anything!!  Smile

After considerable research on the topic when I refloored my kitchen in my old house I have this incontrovertible piece of advice.

No half-assing it please. I can only imagine want kind of gunk will build up in that mound of caulk between the floor and the toilet if you cut the flooring around the crapper.

Removing a toilet is easy. Turn off the water. Flush it to drain the tank and bowl. Disconnect the water supply. Remove the two bolts on the floor and lift of. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes (assuming the bolts aren't rusted/broken/impossible to break loose).

Ok thanks for all the replies. This is what happened.....

I tried to unscrew the base of the toilet and caused a crack in the outlet pipe at the back. Next thing you know water starts pouring out and I'm like panicing and I don't have a clue what to do.

Next thing you know the wife is calling a plumber (covered under our insurance) and this guy has to fix the leak and I am looking at him trying to pretend it was not my fault. Now the leak is fixed and I still have not done the floor!  cry

Well, i'd be a little less obvious. Take her to dinner first. Buy a nice bottle of wine and tell her how beautiful she looks. Then, if it looks on, take her back to yours and i'd suggest you try to nail her in your bed first. I think if you suggest your bathroom floor, she may think you are odd. Certainly around the toilet would be a no-no. Big grin
