Fiat Punto Or Renault Clio

Sat Nov 05, 2005 9:17 pm

I need to buy a new car and I want to spend about € 15.000/16.000

I like new cars, so I'm interested into the two newest cars available, Fiat Punto and Renault Clio.

Yesterday I went to see the Renault and for a 5 doors authentique diesel 85HP the price (included taxes and discount) is € 16.700.

Today I'll go to ask for the Punto.

Sincerely I like Clio, but Punto seems to be more beautiful and it has 3 stars on EuronCap pedestrian crash (1 star Clio).

What do you think about these two cars?

What's the point? In 6-12 months the roads will be full of these mass production cars.
If you insis on "new" cars I'd go for the facelifted Polo than for the el cheapo Nissan Almeraesque looking Clio or Punto, which doesn't look bad, but then it's Fiat and their quality is, well, questionable.

Always the Clio. The new clio is truly amazing and a very good car.
Drives smoothly as well.

We have a say in Germany for FIAT.
it means (F)ehler (I)n (A)llen (T)eilen
Means in general Every part (of that car) is faulty.
Never buy this italian crap. If you buy italy's cars. Do it with style!

By all accounts the new Punto and Clio should blow the Polo out of the water for ride/handling and value. The Polo has never exactly been a value proposition, and it's looking a mite expensive and even slightly dated despite the facelift. The Punto and Clio will both be significantly better value, as well as being roomier and, in the case of the Clio, offering better perceived quality. As for mechanical reliability, I'd expect the Clio to be good; the Punto is a bit more of an unknown quantity. And as for VW's vaunted reliability, it's far from all it's cracked up to be.

Buy a nice Japanese 2nd hand car. The amount of extras and choice you have for your money is second to none, plus the reliability is really good. I have had a Civic, Integra and now a Prelude and the worst thing to go wrong was just the distributor on the Prelude. Not a big job.

I had FIATs since buying my first motor-car in 1974 and can say that, whenever far from being RollsRoyce, the quality is NOT "questionable" at all, the driving quality is second to none. I have driven with FIAT UNOs from Switzerland to London, to Paris, St.Malo, Narbonne, Torino and Frankfurt, and can say that these cars are OK .

The Punto is NOT "crap". Had this car as a hired car in many places. It is an excellent one. I throughout the years had many cars on hire, ranging from Lada to Skoda, Ford, Opel, VW, Renault, Peugeot, Nasr, Nissan, Mazda, Chrysler, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, Pontiac and others -- so that I can well compare.

At least the first three are considered rubbish here in my area in Germany.

Having said that, VW is no bad quality but i myself don't like the cars and there price tagging is far beyond what they offer.

The only make out of the four I really DO consider rubbish is VW. Had that curse to the world twice in Zurich and three times on Malta. The quality of the material may be up-standard but the cars as such are clearly NOT my style .

VWs are rubbish because you don't like them? Interesting theory, could you explain?

F.pier,

Try neither. Get a Honda Jazz instead.

The Honda Jazz is reasonably fuel-efficient and has interior configuration flexibility that is better than what that new Clio or Punto offers.  Smile And when you sell the car the Jazz will maintain its resale value way higher, too.  bigthumbsup

I would never buy a Japanese car, only European cars.

I already have a Punto (1st series) and a Polo (new Polo) and sincerely Polo isn't very good, it goes on the right, the quality is questionable.

And then I like new cars, not restyling, so the only new European cars are Punto and Clio, the only ones 5 stars EuronCap.

I think quality of new Punto is not bad, at least non less than Clio quality.

Sorry but VW is really rubbish. You can have an argument about the style but tastes are different so that doesn't count although VW styles are complete rubbish to me from FOX to Phaeton.

They offer products which aren't pricy at all. Rubbish interiors for too high prices.

It isn't. You may hate them with a passion, but they haven't become one of the world's largest car manufacturers by producing nothing but rubbish.

Uh huh. I kind of like the interior the Passat. But I probably don't know what I'm talking about, having travelled nothing but a couple thousand kms in it, mostly as the driver... I guess the comfort of the seats was an illusion, the pleasant accessibility of the items I used was a plot to fool me into liking that piece of "rubbish", the powerful a/c was a trick to make me believe I actually was in a car deserving the name, the great handling of the car was just the effect of the chemtrails VW sprays down on us in cooperation with the US DOD, I was lied into believing the low fuel consumption and they put a special version in my family's car so I'd buy the lie about good acceleration.

FYI, I think the Clio is butt ugly and I'd never even think about a Japanese car. Do you see me bashing these cars to no end?

Thank you.

If I were you I'd give FIAT a chance as I'm the first who complains over the quality of Fiat's products, I must say that I fully trust the new management and I really believe that they have done a great job with the Grande Punto, and hope that it will help Fiat getting out of the financial crisis...

I am thinking of buying s new car next year and I have the same doubts as you. If I have a little more money I'll go for the Citroen C4 or the Astra 3-door but for the moment the Punto seems the better option. Renaults are very good cars but somehow aren't really my style.

What about explanation for the condemnation of OPEL. My father drove Opel between 1958 and 1993, and all his cars were most reliable, highly comfortable, and quite good. ALL condemnations like "rubbish" simply are personal things and NOT factual.

All nonsense. "part faulty" ? not at all ! it obviously is just prejudice and not based on reality. And "crap" ? not at all ! again prejudice .

out of defence for your national motor car industry ? or what ?

Or Fehlerhaft In Allen Teilen, as my uncle likes to say (then again, he also says Ford really means Fehlerhaft Oder Richtig Defekt) Big grin

All kidding aside - although I don't know whether I'd ever buy a FIAT car (I would get an Alfa Romeo though, which is technically a Fiat), maybe it's time to put some of those old prejudices against Italian cars aside. I believe that the new Punto is the first step in the right direction for Fiat, it is a completely new car and they have put a lot of effort into it.

At the very least, give it a try; it may not be perfect, but then neither are the likes of VW, Audi, or Mercedes -- in fact, we've had far more problems with our Mercedes in the past 4 years than my cousin had with her Fiat Uno in 10. But I still do have a penchant for German cars  Smile

Anyhow, as far as the topic is concerned, I'd go with either of the two. The Clio I find is a very very good reincarnation of the original car, whilst the Punto (finally) looks like a decent job by Fiat. I've had the chance to look at one recently and it was really nice inside.

I do like the latest offerings from France though, since Peugeot, Citroën and Renault have been churning out some real beauties lately! I particularly like the Renault Mégane and the Citroën C4, they remind me of the more original vehicles, like the DS, that made French car makers famous in the past.

I would consider the Punto myself as long as you get a good deal, You'd probably be best off going for an ex showroom demonstrator. These models are normally specified with all the kit, but save you a fair whack off the list price. I think a lot of people don't understand how hard Fiat has been working in the last 5 years or so to turn their 'questionable' reputation around, so this latest Punto is by no means going to be a duffer (not that any of the older Puntos were either). The Renault diesels are good though!

I'd like to add that we used to run a Fiat car, unquestionable reliability. My brother runs a 2001 Punto, again, absolutely no trouble whatsoever.

Rgds.
