Beeps/Limiters On Rental Cars

Mon Nov 07, 2005 11:51 pm

During our last holiday in the UAE we rented a car that had a very annoying feature, it would go BEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP as soon as we went higher than the 120 kph speed limit.

It however had no limiter so it did not prevent us from taking it to 195 kph  Wink

Is this common to all rental cars in the Gulf ? and can this thingy be found in other countries as well ?

In the USA, some small rental companies had devices that record all driving of their vehicles, including distances and speed traveled at. The rental company would then make the renter pay a fine if they traveled 80 MPH+ at any time or traveled outside of the region or states the vehicle or renter was not authorized to go into. The co's had these recorders to reduce abuse of vehicles and to hold down insurance costs. Some states have banned or require the renter to be very clearly told that recording devices are installed due to complaints by renters slapped with fines and on privacy issues. Problem is now with navigation systems being more common with rented vehicles (with GPS, other devices) any and really all car rental companies can be 'big brother'.

It is also a common feature in taxis there. I remember that fellow A.net member SQ325 and I took a taxi from Jumeirah Beach to the airport and the friggin thing was beeping during the whole ride because the taxi driver was speeding like hell.

Really annoying!

Actually by itself a rental company could not track you using a GPS system. Indeed GPS works using triangulation and does not send any signals up. Add a system that sends signals via airwaves/mobile phone, etc... and then yes they can track you.

However, that is seen to be a breach of privacy in many countries and a customer is often in his right to ask for such a thing to be disabled in countries/states where it may be installed.
