Anyone Observed/Photographed Mars Recently?

Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:38 am

Hi

Am I right that the Earth has been relatively not too far from Mars recently? First I thought this very bright orangeish star might have been an airliner or something else but when I looked it up online it mentioned Mars (the nearest distance between the planets sometime end of October/beginning of November).

I'm no astronomer and haven't even managed to look through binoculars at it. I know I can just download photos of it off the internet but just wondering if anyone has their own telescope/what results or photos they might have got from observing it in the previous month.

Many thanks

unless you have a big telescope you can't see anything except a bigger red dot. It isn't as close as it was a year or so ago, but still pretty cool. Amazing how far away it is it though

It has been very close, I took some photos the other night I need to dig out. On full telephoto, 6MP blown up on the screen, you get a bright red circle with the moons orbiting it. On my photo you can see it's half light and half dark.

I'll post it tonight!

Cheers,
Noel.

One of the best close-up photo's ever taken of Mars - The Hubble Space Telescope, March 10th, 1997.

Yeah I have noticed how clear it appears in the sky lately... I used to be an astronomy geek when I was a kid. It might not be as close as it was a couple of months ago, but the magnitude is certainly brighter than it has ever been in a while. It looks very unique in the sky. Not quite like anything else that shines at night  Smile

True, i believe that Mars will not be this close to the Earth until 2023 or something like that.

This Friday, at our local arena, local astronomers will be letting the general public view Mars thru their telescopes. I'll be taking my kids for this event.

The heaves are a wonderful thing.
