Aviation Fans Could Be Seen As Terrorist?

Thu Nov 10, 2005 1:40 am

I was just thinking, at what point do you think an aviation enthusiast could be considered a terrorist. I have a scanner, charts of ABZ,flight simulator, printed out flight schedules in my room.
If the police raided my house, what do you think they'd consider me as? Aviation fan or terrorist?
Thanks

In terms of their initial approach?

Depends on your skin colour, I suspect. Sad

Had that in the past. In mid-2003 I wanted to go to Milan-Malpensa from Lugano by car. Got into a control of the anti-terror-squad of the Carabinieri in PonteTresa, who found such "material" with me. As a result I was "interviewed" for five or six hours, and my car searched through totally, and everything photocopied. I in the end could get out, but the day of course was ruined.

Farther back, after the Zerqa-matter in 1970, I got controlled by police when photographing at ZRH-airport up to four times per day. And during the years fairly often had that kind of problem.

The Italians are notorious for their treatment of aviation enthusiasts - I know several people who have been arrested for simply taking photographs out of the airport windows and writing down registrations.

Certainly not on my top list of spotting destinations!

How come the Italians are SO harsh?
Have they had any major terrorist attacks involving aviation in any way in the past?

Isn't the Achille Lauro a widebody?

My son just came through Fiumicino after we had talked about this. He said there were uniformed troops up on the balconies and some of them were pointing their weapons directly at the crowd.

Pretty damn scary!

NOT aviation involved, but some things have almost occurred in Italy

Fiumicino ? they possibly just are angry that the major civil aviation hub of Italy has changed up to Malpensa !

Not exactly terrorism,

There was an incident in Greece in 2000 where 12 British planespotters were arrested for charges of espionage, IIRC.

I'll post some links about this later.
