Who Is The Top Pop/Rock Band Record Sellers Ever?

Sat Nov 12, 2005 7:45 pm

Over the years, basically from the 1950's up until today, who is listed on the official Top 10 record seller list as the most successfull with the most records sold? The Beatles, Abba, Queen, U2, etc? Remember: Groups, not soloists

The rolling stones maybe, they've been around for ages. They've had plenty of time and records to get up there.

Officially I don't have a clue, but I would imagine The Beatles, The Rolling Stones to be the top 2.

I moonlight as a DJ (not as glamorous a gig as one would think!)...and we were just talking about this last weekend...

Theres many ways of measuring it:

Single sales
Albums (CD) sales
Number of Top 10 singles
Number of Charted singles
Number of Number 1 singles
Overall time spent in airplay charts (Billboard/Cashbox)
Concert tickets sales/attendance
etc.

The Beatles are generally regarded as leaders in most categories except in some album sales categories. The Rolling Stones are a close second. Pink Floyd right behind...but again, there are SO many ways to slice it.
Before Jerry died...the Dead were on their way to some concert attendance record, while the Stones I believe currently lead in lifetime ticket sales...with upstarts U2 and Aerosmith close behind.

Our discussion was if U2, Aerosmith or a future band would ever equal the mass popularity of the Fab Four...so far the jury says no.

The Eagles have the top selling album of all time, so I'm sure they are up there.

Okay, let's say total albums (records and CD's) sold from when the group started up until now.

In the United States by album sales:

1. The Beatles - 168.5 million
2. Led Zeppelin - 107.5 million
3. Eagles - 89 million
4. Pink Floyd - 73.5 million
5. AC/DC - 66 million
6. Aerosmith - 65.5 million
7. The Rolling Stones - 64.5 million
8. Mettalica - 57 million
9. Van Halen - 56.5 million
10. U2 - 50.5 million

Not bad, 4 British, 4 American, 1 Australian and 1 Irish Band.

for what it's worth, when you take out repackages and greatest hits compilations (which many die hard fans and critics don't consider applicable to real record sales), it's quite an interesting mix up on the list.

I would think Pink Floyd would have to be up there considering the success of Dark Side of the Moon and subsequent albums
