Michael Owen - Englands Best Ever Striker?

Sun Nov 13, 2005 9:13 am

Ashamedly I have to admit, Michael Owen seems to be in a class of his own when it comes to being a striker.
So, is he Englands greatest striker?Could very well be.

People, stupidly, are focussing on Wayne Rooney, when Englands main dangerman is Michael Owen.
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

Kirkie, are you OK? This is dangerously close to praise?  Wow!

Statistically (and those alive at the time agree) Jimmy Greaves would probably be the best. 44 goals in 57 games is an astonishing record.

Owen's extremely good, but I think Lineker was a better finisher.

It was a friendly, mate. Relax. We knew beforehand that England were good, and that Argentina were good. It could have gone either way and was a terrific game. Nothing changes as a result, does it?

That was the first name that sprang to mind. I do think Owen was a top striker a few years ago but he seems to have lost something.

Didn't Brian Clough get a phenomenal number of goals per game during his England career?

No, he only played twice for England. His career was cut short by injury. His club record was awesome though, something like 250 goals in 270 games.

I think Owen possesses more passing and playmaking skills than Lineker. He is a more complete player, I think, while not falling short in terms of goal-scoring abilities.

Oops! When he died I was surprised to hear what his strike rate was - I guess I just fused the two facts. That explains why no-one (else) ever mentions his England scoring rate.  Smile

Wouldn't you say Lineker was generally more of a 6-yard box predator while Owen gets a lot of his goals from further out? As far as all round skill goes, I am one of those who believes Rooney has it. If he could just stop losing the rag quite so often.

A lot of people would agree with that. It's a pity he didn't get a starring role in the World Cup final in 1666 (just before the Great Fire burned Wembley Stadium down).  Smile

As much as I think Rooney looks like a Chav I have to agree with you, when he gets the ball you always know good things are going to happen.
I'll take my hat off to him for last night he played like a Gent, helping opposing players back on their feet and not losing his rag, much.  Smile

Don't get me wrong, I do rate Owen. Maybe his dip in form was more to do with the players around him and the style of his teams at the time. Crouch is better than a lot seem to think - I guess the jury's still out on his England career.

I think Rooney had more players running after him last night than Owen. And that flip that he attempted over the keeper was really good and was unlucky to hit the post as well.
Good news to England, both are great strikers.

I'd definitely rate him as among the very best. Owen often has the poise and finishing skils when you need them most. I think his dip in form for England has been much more down to problems in the midfield than to himself. I wish, oh I wish, England would cut down on the desperate long ball forward strategy from the back. Owen is a short guy. He won't win headers, and if he has to spend the whole game chasing the ball when England keep giving up possession, he won't score. On the other hand, if you put the ball in the right place for him, he will come alive in his undertstated way.

These days Rooney is even more exciting, but it is too bad he acts (and looks) like a gorilla so often. I hope against hope that he doesn't self-destruct into a has-been, drinking, brawling, wife beater.

I really think England have a team now with more depth than in the last couple competitions. Midfield has been the weak spot despite the big names. But things are looking up. Joe Cole's recent coming into more consistent form has been a blessing. And Lampard has made a great difference to the team.

I can't wait for this summer.

Interesting to compare Owen anmd Lineker's stats.

Lineker 48 goals from 80 games

Owen 35 from 75

Of course, some of these youngsters just think Lineker's a TV presenter.  grumpy

And most of all, Lineker understood the deeper meaning of football, you know, how things work in the great, universal scheme, on a more transcendental, metaphysical level:

Michael Owen is one of the top 3 best strikers in English football, his international and domestic record speaks for itself. Against Argentina on saturday he did jackshit for 84 minutes, then BANG, two lethal headers out of nowhere. That's what great strikers do, score goals on a regular basis.
