Do You Use Inkjet Cartridge Refills?

Sun Nov 13, 2005 8:37 pm

I have just started using inkjet cartridge refills, and I am glad that I have. I've already spent "a small fortune" on new inkjet cartridges and I'm just sorry that I did not start using these refills earlier. At least now I can get a lot more printing done!

Computer printer ink cartriges are one of the biggest rip-off's in the world. What has happened is they give away the printers for like $50 when they are worth $100 to make, but then make the profits from the ink. For HP for example, huge amounts of and about their only profits come from ink cartrige sales. Some companies sell alternative brand refilled cartriges, but one must be careful with the brands they choose. There are also some bootleg China made cartriges which have potential quality problems.

Believe me, those 'bootleg' China cartridges are quite often actually better than the originals, and I speak from experience, since I am working in the Ink cartridge busines. And yes, it is true that the printer producers only make money off the cartridges, not the printers. We were once offered Lexmark printers for, and I kid you not, a price of on €3! Of course those were the most basic printers Lexmark offers, but still quite shocking when you see that we usually sell the ink cartridges for 10x the prices. Of course, if you do not buy the best printer, you're screwed, as the stores where you buy your printers don't want to sell the printer that's best for you, but rather that one whose cartidges guarantee them the biggest profit. If available, always opt for either Epson or Canon, which IMHO is the best choice.
The IP3000 costs around €80, if not less already, and you get perfect quality replica's for only €4 a piece. Try getting them that cheap for HP or Lexmark.

I bought a box of Chinese knockoffs for my Epson, which were on a buy one get one free offer. Instead of eight pounds or so for the Epson, these worked out at around 75 pence.

Perfectly good cartridges. So I ended up buying eight complete sets.

Refills sometimes work but all I ever got with a Lexmark cartridge refill kit was a godawful mess, axe murderer hands and muddy purple colour prints. So I dumped it and bought an Epson with cheap generic cartridges widely available. The generic refilled ones never worked for me either, despite still being expensive to buy. Lex carts just do not take to being refilled successfully.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Get a laser printer, toner may be expensive, but you get a few thousand pages out of one toner cartridge.

I got sick of the inkjet game and got a laser. A laser printer is $350 up front for a pretty good one, toner cartridges are about $70 and last a couple years for me.

An inkjet printer doesn't cost much.. but at $40 a pop those ink cartridges add up, especially when you need to replace them quarterly whether or not you used them.

Also, the quality a laser printer gives you on text is hard to beat, and it is more water resistant. Considering 99% of what I print is text it made sense, if you do a lot of graphics or need color then this model doesn't work.

The last time the inkjet cartridges went out on my Lexmark, I said the hell with spending the money on them and just bought a new printer whose refills are half as expensive as the Lexmark ones. I bought the remanufactured refills once, they lasted half as long as the OEM ones.

That is actually a pretty good idea when you print a lot, these ink cartridges are rip-off, period! Once I bought a HP printer for 35,99 EUR but the friggin ink cartridge I needed later was 39,99 EUR.... WTF?

I was warned once, that refill could cause damage of printing head if you do not print often. Do not know if it is true or not, but usually I change cartridges twice a year, so prefer to stay with originals.
