Mon Nov 14, 2005 11:01 am

I have a poll question for everyone here.

 rotfl  Excellent.

I use Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic in the BAFDT.

I change it when the mileage says it needs it, about every 5000-6000 miles. Since I work remote, and don't drive my personal vehicle but about 6000 miles a year, they are usually a once a year deal.

BTW, Oil change on Ford Diesel Powerstroke, 14 quarts Delo + Motorcraft filter + labor + disposal + tax = $85.00. GM Duramax, same thing.

I run synthetic, so I generally go to about 5500 miles. I might change it earlier out of convienence if the weather is nice. I generally do a thorough inspection and underbody/frame/suspension wash while I'm there and re-silicone all rubber boots/bushings etc.

When the computer in the car shows that it is time for an oil change. I then press the 'talk' button and say 'Acura' The car dials the dealership, I book an appointment and then the people there do it. Simple.

I guess I learned the wisdom of 3000 from my dad. He's changed it at 3000 almost like clockwork, and, out of the many many vehicles he has owned for many many years, he has never had a single internal engine problem.

GM, Ford, Chrysler, Acura, not one.

Actually the 3000 mile interval is a bit of an urban legend.

Even with dino juice most cars can go for longer intervals between changes... ~5000-6000 miles. And with synthetic you can safely double your interval. If you are concerned about the quality of your oil at a longer interval get a sample of it so you can have it analyzed. However if your car has a known sludge issue then you need to be more mindful of the published interval as well as the spec of the oil you use. Some manufacterers have very specific oil specs, and not all off the shelf oils will work.

As for me, roughly every 4-6 months (which works out to 3-4k miles given my short commute), my car gets a fresh 4.5 qts of Valvoline 5W-30 dino juice.

I think most people recommend oil and filter changes every 3,000 to 3,500 statute miles (USA) or 5,000 to 6,000 kilometers (most of the world) travelled. This is especially true nowadays with today's smaller engines, which tend to break down oil rather quickly because today's engines with their high rev limits and complicated valvetrains tend to run quite hot.

I use Castrol 20-50. Another good brand to use is Quaker State.
20-50 is recommended for cars with over 100,000 miles.

Annually or 12,000 miles which ever comes soonest. It has to be done with Synthetic oil and never needs a top up between oil changes.

I change the oil of my car twice a year which is around 4000-6000 miles. I had the oil changed in a garage in August. Yesterday I removed the top 1/4 of the engine to inspect the cause of some weird noise inside the engine when starting the car cold. There doesn't seemed to be that much wear on the camshafts. But I noticed the oil which is very thick and I am not really sure what type of oil it is. I will be doing the next oil change myself between January and March with Castrol GTX magnatex 10W-40. The recommended oil change intervals written on the car hand book is every 20000 miles or 2 years. By 20000 miles the car might not be drivable at all because the oil is totally black after 4000 miles. The oil filter on my car is a bit funny. It's not one of those which is made of metal but made with plastic containing a filter element inside.

Anyone know which brand and type of oil is good for the engine that can be brought in Europe?

If you live in a cold climate, like mine (upstate NY), 20W-50 will turn into molasses once the temps dip below freezing. Which is probably not an issue in sunny California. If you drive a new/newer car that is still under factory warranty I'd be careful to not put an oil that is not specifically recommendated by the factory. Should you have a major engine problem, depending on the company, that could be grounds for denial of a warranty claim. Especially on cars with known sludge issues.

About every 12 000 km (about 7500 miles). No need to do it sooner as long as your car is in good running order, you check the oil on a regular basis and make sure it's not to dark or unless you have a very high performance car that may require it sooner.

You're likely pouring out good oil. Any synthetic will get you well more than the 3,000 mile mark especially if you are using Mobile products.

Synthetics should get you a good 5,000 miles before you consider an oil change. Changing at 3,000 often waste oil for little (if any) improvement to engine performance or life.

Assuming you don't live in San Fransico or off-road every direction to work, the 3,000 mile mark is just one of those old-wives adages that many people (unnecessarily) live by.

Quoting RayChuang (Reply 28):
This is especially true nowadays with today's smaller engines, which tend to break down oil rather quickly because today's engines with their high rev limits and complicated valvetrains tend to run quite hot.

The real danger to these engines is sludge, which can be attributed to poor engine maintenance. There are, however, certain models that are more prone to sludge than others. Off the top of my head, I've seen service warnings for the Toyota/Lexux 2.2L and VW/Audi 1.8Turbo (what isn't messed up with that engine?)

The advantage of Synthetic Oil is that it retains it's viscosity longer and most important...does not dissolve rubber (seals gaskets) like petroleum oil does.

Even though synthetic does not break down as easily, it still gets dirty. Combustion by-products, mostly carbon, still contaminate the oil and are abrasive. As DfwRevolution said above, 5K is a good interval. The main advantage of Synthetics is gasket and seal preservation.

And....when an engine is new and "broken in" with petroleum oil, using synthetic is much less of an advantage. Like a new skillet, the engine block is "seasoned" with petroleum oil and the seals have already absorbed it. Synthetic oil will only prolong the inevitable.

PS. Avoid lubricants claiming to have "liquid ball bearings" or say...a certain state is in the name or maybe share the name with a certain "Oats" breakfast cereal. They have paraffin and PVC blended in to coat the engine after shut down. The theory is good...but the accumulation of sludge isn't worth it.

Bang on ! Check owners manual as to spec of oil ( SF-CJ etc, brand does not matter, and dino or treehugger makes no difference, as per a Castrol seminar I just attended.) Also, check definition of "extreme conditions", surprisingly, using vehicle for short hauls all its life will fall into definition of "extreme".  thumbsup

The manual for my Opel Astra 1600cc/16V states to change oil after 15000 km ( = 9300 mi) or after 12 months (applicable for normal use in moderate climate).
For my former car (also Opel Astra) I did the oil changes on my own using a synthetic no-name oil rated as 0W40 at about the very same intervals. That 1400cc/8V-engine ran w/o any unusual problems for 218.000 km after which I had to write it off due to severe rust in the car´s body (repairs would have been uneconomical).

Why is it that US-cars need (?) or get (?) so very short intervals of oil-change ?
(This question does not apply to those cars operated in veeery cold environments).

That's a good question. Possibly it's because more European cars are sold with a fill of synthetic motor oil than American cars.
The "recommended" oil change interval published by American car manufacturers is somewhat manipulated. The many "Consumer Reports" type publications and CSI studies compare the "Annual maintenance Cost" of the cars tested. By extending the interval from 5000mi. to 7500mi, the annual cost is lower and thus a better rating in this category. It may seem insignificant, but realize these are the same morons who rate vehicles by the number of cup holders.

In my experience, after 5000mi, the oil is pretty shot.

Quoting Kevinl1011 (Reply 45):
Possibly it's because more European cars are sold with a fill of synthetic motor oil than American cars.

Though most manufacturers have high requirements regarding the API-rating of their motor oils, I don´t think that in Europe the main bulk of engines is shipped with a fully synthetic oil. A normally refined oil rated at 15W40 is standard for replacements, a semi-synthetic oil rated at 10W40 often is used in workshops licensed by manufacturers.
Getting a oil-change using any more "exotic" oils (5W40, 0W40, etc.) requires a specific order by the customer.

As the motor oil during its life mainly is polluted by those residues from burning the fuel, might there be a connection with the different octane-ratings of fuels used in the U.S. vs. Europe ? In many european countries (Germany is an exception here), the lowest fuel-quality on sale is rated as 95 octane. Does this 95-octane fuel burn cleaner than the U.S.-87-octane ?

Another idea:
Those big cars in the U.S. to my experience rarely get a really hot radiator, while those smaller engines in use in Europe sometimes get really hot (soem of them are even cooled by a fan after shutdown of the engine) which will enable a lot of condensed residue from the fuelburn being "cooked" out of the engine oil (vapours will be sucked off and burned again during normal combustion). This procedure is also very useful to get a engine oil rather clean.

Btw, engines burning standard fuel ("Otto"-engine) usually have 50% longer service intervals than diesel-engines. And a single service to a diesel engine usually is a bit more costly. Those were some of the factors I calculated in when I was in the process to decide wether to get otto-engine or a Diesel engine in a new car (but I ended up finding no suitable car and I purchased a used one).

Every 3000, or under/ or every 2 months. My old car I had to do it every 1500 because it got nasty so quickly.

Usually about every 6,000 it goes to the Saturn dealer for the factory recommended service.

I tried to do it about every 3,000 but seeing as I can do that kind of mileage in about 6 weeks I decided to string it out longer.

Last time, I didn't take it to the dealer and just got an oil/filter change at one place, brakes at another and tyres at another, and had the check engine light going on and off intermittently for a while. Took it to the dealer who could find nothing wrong with it but I figured if that's what's going to happen if I don't get the service done at the dealer, I may as well fork out a bit extra and get it done at the dealer anyway!

'06 330i calls for 16,000 mile intervals - I may change it, and the filter, in half that time, considering the car only gets driven 400 miles a month.

'05 Titan calls for 3750 - it get's changed at 3750.

I remember back in the '80's when Mobil One first came out and had a claim of '25,000 mile change interval', quite the radical blend back then or have the participants in this industry ask Mobil to remove that claim - imagine it would hurt business in comparison to 3K change intervals...

My '87 Mustang GT with 187K miles has used Mobil One since 5K miles, engine runs like a charm, does not use oil, and still hits full power on the dyno runs.
