Anybody Have Their Christmas Lights Up Yet?

Wed Nov 16, 2005 10:39 pm

Well its almost the season, and a few people in the neighbouring villages have their lights up already. Mrs NoelG has already started asking me to put the exterior lights up, although I think we will wait until 1st December.

They normally go up the last weekend in November but to be honest the thought of scaling a 30ft ladder to the roofline isn't particularly appealing right at this moment!  Smile

Seriously though - isn't 16 November like way to early to be putting Christmas lights up???

Noel.

I already saw a small number of illuminated houses/gardens in the last days !

I prefer to wait after that Sunday on which we remember or dead ancestors (it´s 20-NOV this year) before putting a few the lights.
OTOH, 27-NOC already is the first Sunday of Advent, so: Hurry up !  Wink

A house in Sunderland has had the lights up for over 2 weeks now. All the families on benefits seem to be able to produce more lights than the Millenuim Stadium. One street has so many lights up they resemble landing lights, so Squeezyjet best make sure their navigation system is working so they don't land in the wrong place, lol.

Well we would usually put them up the last weekend of November so I suppose that's about right - but it's still almost two weeks away!

I hate to say it, and I hate to sound like a snob, but to be honest the only areas with lights up seem to be the more rundown areas, council estates etc. Maybe Christmas comes early in their houses?

Never before 23 December.
That's tradition in our family, the tree gets put up and the house decorated on my mother's birthday or the day after (originally because we didn't have room to receive the guests for the party with a tree in the house).

Of course personally I don't put up anything. I don't care for it myself, don't give a darn to do it for the neighbours (let them put up their own lights if they want to), and will likely not be home anyway.

Sounds about right - we have all sorts, icicle lights, animated reindeer, Santa on a parachute, you name it and we have it! Plus the missus has gone on another spending spree this year, I think she's hoping to have Times Square in our front garden...

But of course it has to be me who puts them all up!  Smile

Nope not yet. But I planned to do it this weekend when I get off work.
I'm going to buy a plastic Christmas tree that I will have in my livingroom. And I will have lights around my balcony.

There are three houses in our street that already have their trees and lights up. Jeez, it's only 16 November!

I'm going to see my girlfriend's aunt this weekend who has children of 8 and 5yrs old and apparently they want to put up the Xmas tree!

Back in the UK I wouldn't consider putting up the tree or decorations before 15th December.

I trust you've got plenty of coins for the electric meter!

I've only seen one house that's got its lights so far. I don't think they should go up until the first Sunday of Advent, which falls on the 27th November. Our (indoor) tree normally goes up a fortnight before Christmas. The dog's been telling us it should be up already as she knows there tree chocolates in the cupboard!

I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't take them down from last year. I don't put them on the house just the trees and shrub in front. I'm a white lights only traditionalist.

Don't get me wrong, I don't turn them on throughout the year, they've just been out there the entire year. I'll turn them on the day after Thanksgiving.

Do you have a separate generator to support the extra electricity load?  Silly

Normally, I put up the window candlestick lights on Dec. 1 & the tree around Dec. 10-15. Since I live in an apartment complex, I'm somewhat limited in what I can put up. If I was living in a house, it would be a whole different story.

Around my neighborhood, there were more houses decked out with lights for Halloween than for Christmas. Presently, a couple houses even have lighted Thanksgiving decorations (inflatable turkey & pilgrim) up.

15 years ago, putting holiday lights up other than Christmastime was essentially unheard of.

What's embarrassing about not wanting to got through the trouble of hanging them up & taking them down; especially if your not going to change the bulb type, scheme arrangement or colors?

Truth be told, a traditionalist in Christmas lighting would use the standard incandescent C7s (indoor use) and/or C9s (outdoor use) in full multi-colors. Bonus points if the string contains the pre-1977 GE bulbs with the ceramic-peel-resistant colors. Double-bonus points if the entire string (& bulbs) were made entirely in the United States, or at least in North America.

When I had my house in South Anchorage I never took them down - in fact I put them up in the summer when I could more easily get to the trees in the front yard and the edge of the roof . . . without the hazard of taking a gainer off the snow laden roof or having to wade through three feet of white stuff. When the first serious snow fall hit, I ran an extension cord out over the front yard and had it at the ready for the the after Thanksgiving. All I really needed to do is replace a bulb or three . . . and no one noticed them in the summer.

I haven't put up a tree or lights in three years . . . and won't this year. I will be up north at work for both Thanksgiving and Christmas . . . I don't see the need to deal with the labor of decorating for the holidays when I won't be here. I bought a new Christmas Tree (fake of course) (that is still sitting in the box in my garage) two years ago . . . never opened the box . . .

I actually am considering having the electric company add a service to my place for all the lights, and yes ...we do have a generator....

check, check, and check. Target and Ace Hardware stock replacement bulbs. We are almost out of actual original bulbs, but a few still work. You can get either the clear ones or the ceramic coated ones too.

this does mean you are as big a geek as me since you knew all that....  Wink

Yes and no. My crazy wife has halloween lights(ghosts) that I still haven't taken down. I'll probably just do a swap this weekend although I'm generally philosphically opposed to Christmas stuff before Turkey day.

It makes me absolutly sick to have been seeing Christmas decorations in stores since mid-October. One radio station in Portland is already playing Christmas music 24/7! People ask why I am a Scrooge at the holidays. Do we really need to be reminded to spend, spend, spend during November and December? Everyone knows what is coming, so why can't we just enjoy one holiday at a time!

Bah! Humbug.....

I will put them up soon after Thanksgiving, but I will not turn them on until it gets closer to Christmas. If I don't put them up soon the weather will start getting colder and I don't want to be outside freezing my butt off putting up lights!  cold

To be honest, since we moved to NZ and have the bizarre experience of a baking hot Christmas we really don't do all that stuff, doesn't get dark until late so there isn't much need, we have a 1 foot high tree, The Hormones makes some paper chains and we make sure there's loads of beer in the fridge.

We do the presents, head down the beach, do kayaking and hooning around with the boat, go home, fire up the barbie and get drunk whilst gazing out to sea.

Plenty of the neighbours do the lit up house bit but we don't feel "christmassy" in the heat.
We, the undersigned, do hereby consent.....
