Why Wasn't Internet Introduced Sooner?

Thu Nov 17, 2005 7:31 am

I am wondering why the internet wasn't introduced to the masses in the 1960's instead of mid-1990's. Could the cold war have something to do about this?

Perhaps a lack of personal computers in the 60's could have hindered the internet.

As MDorBust alluded to, it would have been technically impossible to do so.

Also, it was the World Wide Web, which is only one part of the Internet, that proliferated in popularity in the '90s, because the HTTP browser software was only created early in that decade. Other Internet protocols existed long before though (BBS, Usenet, FTP, Gopher, Telnet, e-mail, etc.) and were available to the public.

Hey, you got me thinking.

Why didn't they invent aviation a couple a hundred years eariler? Just think of all the extra ex-airlines we could talk about here. (carefully remove sarcasm chip)

Well, regardless of when aviation was invented, we'd still be asking the time-honored question..

When will NW retire their DC-9's?
