Wireless Power!

Sun Nov 20, 2005 8:18 pm

Okay, a bit farfetched I know... but doesn't it seem like a logical step forward?

I mean being able to operate electronic devices without the need for plugs or batteries! A "wireless national grid"!

...Random outburst over...

And how would you realise it? Microwaves?!? I wouldn't exactly fancy high-energy radiation buzzing around me all the time.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

It's actually possible over (very) short distances by induction, and also used in some devices. You can for instance buy a wireless computer mouse, that are supported with power from the mousepad.

But I don't see a great potential in this for larger scope applications. It might be useful for electronic peripherals, but it is impossible so far to use at greater ranges, without being vastly ineffective or dangerous.

It would be extremely inefficient and extremely dangerous.

Not a new idea by any means, and certainly not far fetched...

The idea goes a long ways back. The two big problems are it is not possible to bill people for using it, so the profit motive doesn't favor it, and the tendency of the field to rupture blood vessels in our brains.

Read up on Nicola Tesla. Cool stuff!

Doctors could certainly bill people for the second problem....  Smile
