What Should I Buy - Pioneer Plasma Or Sony LCD?

Mon Nov 21, 2005 2:51 am

I know, I know, this topic's been discussed before.

Just when I was ready to plunk down some hard-earned money on a SONY plasma TV after 5 years of hemming and hawing, SONY decides to pull out of the Plasma business.

So it's down to the SONY Bravia 40" LCD vs the Pioneer 43" 4360 plasma TV. I can't completely base my decisions on the picture quality in the store, and wonder if any a.netters can advise me.

The LCD seems to be a little pasty on the fleshtones, and I wonder how regular Non-HD programs will look on it. I'd hate to buy something that will be worse than my 15-year old XBR on standard TV.

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest Sony but it's up to which you prefer.

We don't have HD in Germany yet so they show standard television with it's utterly bad resolution on them in the store and it looks awful on a bog flatscreen. I'll hope they'll introduce HD here soon (they want to have it here by 2006 for WC2006 in Germany) then i'll will decide if i buy a flat.
I hope by then the problem is solved for me because i find it hard to determine what's better for me: LCD or Plasma.

I did some research earlier this year.

When it comes down to it, its the picture quality that counts.... crazy

I was contemplating the same thing you are now. In the end, you won't believe it.

I went for a Sony CRT 36" Hi-Scan. Still the best picture going...a real true black !.

YooYoo, I fully understand what you did, the picture on a CRT is FAR better than LCD or Plasma (fixed pixels, scaling), and MUCH cheaper too.

However, I did want a larger and wider screen to watch DVDs,HBO and other HD channels , so I am talking myself into accepting a lower-quality standard broadcast picture at a much higher price!

Right now, I walked over to Circuit City, and am leaning towards the Pioneer.

The pricing is about $2,800 for the SONY and $3,400 for the Pioneer. Planning to pull the trigger Tuesday.

Appreciate the guidance!

Tsk tsk,............doesn't anyone realize that altho plasma tv's are awesum, they are also prone to 'picture burn'?!?!?! This means that if u're unlucky enough or if you're stupid then a permanant image is 'burnt' into the screen...don't forget, plasma is a very high temp gas. The best choice and the only way to go for quality is LCD. Sure, it costs more but the more you pay, the better quality you get and it will last years! Oh, you can even hook up your comp to the tv so you can have a.net displayed on your tv, or you can play your XBOX! lol

Thats a load of crap! You would have to have the same image on the screen constantly for about 12000 hours for an image to burn like that!

SPO, Really? Why don't you tell that to all the customers who've returned theirs due to exactly what i described? Maybe you think it was just a flaw found in testing? Or maybe you don't think it happens? Oh wait, the way you replied it would seem you're the chief designer/tester for a tv manufacturer. If it's a load of crap, why do SOME ( i say SOME, not EVERYONE) ppl have problems?

Cheers

I concur with YooYoo on this. In the last year I purchased a 20" LCD for my room, and quite frankly I like it a lot. However, my dad recently purchased a 32" HD CRT TV and the picture quality is absolutely fantastic! I don't regret my purchase of the LCD, but if space isn't an issue at all, I would still go for the tried and true CRT. It is definitely nice to have so much available choice in technologies these days.

Buy both and send them to me. I will gladly foot the cost for HD cable and test them out for the next 6 months.

DON'T GO PLASMA!!!!!

I spent some time at a manufacturer's center, learning about all the new technology in TV's, etc. Even the demo plasma TV's there had picture burn on them. Plus, they operate at a very high temperature.

I came away from that training class knowing that I personally would never buy a plasma TV, with all its drawbacks, especially when there is so much more on the market now that is so superior!

Explore a little more...there is so much new technology out there now.

I'm not sure, but, i think that Sony is discontinuing their Plasma line and concentrating on their LCD line? Why, I don't know but I think the sales Plasma Vs. LCD are leaning towards LCD so now they want to concentrate on that product.

The CRT Hi-scan model Sony i have is capable of receiving and showing a HD signal, also they do offer a widescreen (16:9) version.

Just a thought.

IF !!! i had to choose i would go for the LCD....there i said it.  Wink

You'll notice that stores such as Future Shop and Best Buy won't sell you a warrenty for longerthan 4 years on a plasma t.v.. The reason for this is because the gas generally leaks out of the t.v. within 4 years and it needs to be replaced. This is what one of the store's associates told me.

Thanks everyone for your most valuable input!

So far, we have YooYoo and CaptainGomes saying CRT is unbeatable for picture quality, to which I wholeheartedly agree.

AzoresLover and Skysurfer are clearly in the LCD camp, and not amused at the suggestion of buying a Plasma TV.

9VSPO is the lone voice in the wilderness endorsing the Pioneer Plasma (my initial default choice).

In summary:

Buy CRT: Best picture, BUT screen not big enough, very bulky for living room.
Buy LCD : much more reliable than Plasma, less burn-in, BUT picture not quite there yet.
Buy Plasma: Picture better than LCD, BUT less useful life, obsolescence and reliability issues.

More thoughts, anybody?

Even harder than choosing between B777 vs A330!  Smile

I had a US$9.000 headache after I bought a Pioneer Plasma, because in cities like where I'm (Bogota, Colombia) we are 2.600 meters above sea level, and this kind of TVs emits a very high pitch tone which turns to be annonying watching movies at low volume.

I would go with LCD 100%.

The plasma displayes seem to be very fragile and are difficult and expensive to repair when it's even an option. I know people who claim that they had plasmas that failed and they were unable to repair them at any cost. The gas does deteriorate over time, but it can't simply be "recharged" despite what some salesperson has to say about it.

I recently purchased a TV at BestBuy and was advised against getting a plasma screen TV because of picture burn and overall "long term maintenance issues". I walked out with a 50" Sony Grand Wega HDTV thingermejig.....it just looked kind of cool!
