Where Are You Off To For Tgiving?

Wed Nov 23, 2005 1:00 am

All you US ANetters - where are you heading for the holiday?

I'm just going home to Michigan - anyone have something more exciting going on?

(Hoping that the NWA sick call-in does *not* happen on Sunday!)

No travel planned, which is good.
What is not good is the precise timing that dinner will require. My stepdaughter recently started work at a nearby drugstore and is working until 1 pm on Thanksgiving Day. My wife is working 3 to 11:30 and has to leave for work by 2:15 at the latest. That only gives us, realistically, about a 45-minute window for dinner. Everything had better be ready on time!

Going over to friends' house. We've gone there for the past few years. They cook everything and we just bring veg and dip for afternoon snacks, and then dessert. We usually bring a bottle of good tequila as well. I feel like we've bought into some great scam.  Smile

Staying put in Berkeley, here. There's a mass and brunch for the faculty staff and students in the morning, and in the evening I'm helping cook the dinner for the community.

Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

Working in the morning, driving down to Houston in the afternoon, be there for a late dinner. Driving back up to Dallas on Friday, hopefully beating the traffic on 45.

Driving to my parents house this year outside Richmond. Two-hour ride, door to door. We alternate years between my folks, and my wife's folks.

Work..

That is the good news, I get to be out of the house or asleep for most of the time my Girlfriend's family is around. Also, work should be very quiet because of the holiday.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

I'm heading home to Philadelphia in a couple hours to spend the holiday with my family and friends that I don't go to school with.

I wish everyone a Safe, Happy, and Healthy Thanksgiving.  wave

Um, aren't you guys celebrating Thanksgiving a little late April?

Anyway, I am on an early Wednesday morning flight to LAX to have Thanksgiving at home with my family. I will be making mashed potatos, helping with other dishes and lifting a 23 pound (10 Kilo) turkey into the oven for my mother.

Yes, you caught me.  Smile We've been in the States for ten years now, and they give us a day off to eat turkey in November, so we take advantage of it and go hang out with Americans who are willing to cook for us.  Smile

How DARE any of you celebrate a day of "thanks", which marked the ceremonious beginning of Native American oppression and the loss of their land.

How DARE you make a poor innocent creature, namely a turkey, the centerpiece of your meal where you stuff your bloated Imperialist bellies while half the children in Africa and countless millions here go hungry. How can we sit there and slaughter these innocent animals and then eat way more than our bodies can handle-and still throw half of it away?

And what about all those vegetables that you are eating? Are plants not living things as well? Yet they are thoughtlessly cut down only to serve as fodder for filling the guts of those very same heartless Americans.

Every one of you who is going to be attending such a hate-filled gathering at the very least, the absolute minimum, you OWE an equivalent amount of food and shelter to humanity. You have it and they don't. So like I said, you OWE those less fortunate.

If you don't think we should eat turkey because it's killing an animal, and you think we shouldn't eat fruits/veggies because they, too are living, what do you propose we eat? In order for something to survive, something has to feed it. Maybe you should take a look at a biology textbook, and look up food chains. In nature, the bear kills a rabbit for food. Is the bear wrong? NO...it's just doing what it needs to to survive.

I spent the day with a family I know, and we went to dinner at Plimouth Plantation, which for those who don't know, is a historic recreation village in Plymouth MA...they have re-enactors who act as if it's 1627...

It was a bit expensive..about $55...but given it was dinner + museum admin, ok.

. . . to work. ANC-FAI-GBH . . .

Deicing took forever in ANC and because of headwinds we needed fuel in FAI . . . of course, being Thanksgiving, no one was immediately available so we sat at FAI for an hour waiting on fuel. Finally arrived 3 hours late.

Gotta love it.

I did however, get paid for the entire day yesterday - even the time spent sitting on my ass trying to get here. PacificJourney oughta love that. . .
