Which one are you? Do you love the works party or do you make any excuse not to go?

I attend all parties hosted by my employer.

I will take all free food and drink as that will be, in all likelihood, my only holiday perk.

My staff Christmas party might be a bit dull, what with there only being two of us.  Wink

in the past i have loved them because i was working for such large firms that i would have a group of co-workers were generally single, my age group, hot and total alcoholics. so we had a great time at the holiday parties that were seriously top-notch, no expense spared events. we would have a great time at the party, then have a car take us around to different clubs because the cars were provided to us by the firm that night.

so yes, i always made it a point to go. where i am currently though, i dont know if i really feel like going--i am in a smaller office, everyone is MARRIED and i would be in the minority....but it will definitely be another top notch elegant affair--plus i have heard some comments lately about how i dont go to the office parties...so i probably have to go to this one!

Hate them! A United Airlines Christmas party is a lame excuse for a party.
In such a politically correct world we live in, they aren't that much fun.

At my last company, where I was for three years, they catered a very nice lunch for us (about 45 in the office) and then they also had wine and beer. The only bad part was that each dept. had to do some sort of holiday skit, which was the idea of the CEO. After that, we could leave early.

This year, I'm at a new company, and we're having our party off site, at a cool bar in Seattle called Jillians. I imagine they'll have good grub and a lot of free drinks. The place has dartboards, pool tables, etc. I'm looking forward to it. And...no stupid skits to do, either..

Considering that my coworkers are on the other side of the country, no, I won't be going this year! At my prior job, we had some good Christmas parties. Two years ago, when we were being shut down, the company who had bought us gave us a "morale budget". I think we spent it all on booze for the party.  Smile It was a great drinkfest. A couple of my coworkers and I ended up in the photocopier room trying to photocopy our bosoms. It didn't work very well but it was great fun.  Smile
But that was when I ruled the world

Well, for the first time ever, I'm not attending our Christmas party. I don't even know why I go to be honest. A couple of years ago, I won a new CD midi system, so I couldn't grumble about it. I'm not in the area for this year's party anyway, I'm off to Southampton to have a little party of my own with my boyfriend (can't wait to see you, Justin xx)

I'm organising a little team Christmas party (the main one if for the company) so we will be off to an Italian restaurant then go and get absolutely hammered.

I love them!
I especially love to crash other company's Christmas parties.

Remember that trip I took to Cuba several years ago?
Well I had won a $1,000.00 gift certificate from the travel agency my company does business with at our company's Christmas party.
Well that pretty much took care of the SFO-CUN leg of the trip.

We have a staff gathering every year in the last week before Christmas.
I hate it and I love it.

I hated it a lot more when we all were supposed to make holiday centerpieces. Nobody ever followed the directions and some people didn't even bother doing it. One year I made the Incredible Flammable Centerpiece where everything was standing straight up out of the water foam and within close proximity to any candle flame. You know what? The "art critics" thought it was great. Unfortunately, the guy who used to give instructions was given the heave-ho from our school when certain offices were downsized. He was a very nice person, but never got any respect.

Every year, I hate that certain departments (including my own) tend to sit together and talk with their most familiar colleagues. Since this is the only time of the year when all of the school's staff gets together, and the Library staff is often considered "aloof," "condescending" and "out of touch" with the rest of the administration, I see this as the ONE opportunity each year when we can do our best to clear up the misconceptions. After nine years, I'm starting to wonder if it's a misconception at all. I intentionally sit somewhere different every year. Sure, there are certain people with whom I'd like to spend more time, but I want to use the chance I have to meet and greet with other people who I'd never see otherwise.

So what do I love about it? The dinner is usually held in the early afternoon, in the student lounge, and doesn't include any alcohol (unless it's part of a recipe.) It also includes vegetarian and vegan selections. The food is great. There are always new people to meet. I learn a little about life outside the Library. ... and it's the one time of the year that I get to fire a hard question at the school President, to his face, and he has to answer.

Well, working for a small organisation it works to my advantage.

Basically our Operations Director (Who works in the same office as us, keeps his hand in, but he owns the company) takes us guys in our department out for a big meal and lots of drinks, as a benefit in kind.

Usually we end up drinking about 2 bottles of wine each, couple bottles of Moet, and then as many pints as you could imagine. Last year I was ill big time afterwards, but thats a sign of a good night out!

There is also a seperate company party arranged by a few members of staff. I've paid my deposit to go to that one, but I'm pulling out 'cus I can't be "bovvered".  Wink

Never been to a staff one before, but this year I have two - the 'official' dressed up, Saturday night party, and the unofficial finish early, go to pub. Both are paid for by my employer Big grin. Result!

ive only ever been to one xmas party! The last two jobs ive had have involved working in a bar, and we never got an xmas party, stingy bosses  Sad

I was supposed to be going to bradford for a curry for the work party, with 5 out of the 8 folk going being the same age as me, so it was going to be a laugh. But i just moved companies a few weeks ago. One of the guys in my department owns a hotel, so we are having the xmas party there. Now theres 20+ folk going, but their all a lot older. Might still be a laugh though!

I remember going to a posh hotel once for a xmas party and there was one table with a bunch of people who were the loudest, most drunk group we had ever seen! I later found out it was the local Police staff party! Big grin

Ah, I have ahead of me at least three holidays parties, being the first one next Thursday. The last one is the official, hosted by the school. Lots of wine, liquor and good food.

Gotta love them!

I have been working for law firms in NY City for over 27 years and usually attend the 'Holiday' Party. I haven't attended sometimes due to conflicts with other activities or not in the mood to be with my co-workers. For law firms, often it is an opportunity for contacts for or a test of beheavor of young associates or next summers associates or fall's 1st year associates.
Sometimes what you see happen there can be good extortion material  eyepopping , like when someone overdoes the drinking and gets stupid, gets really crazy on the dance floor or pairs off/gets hot with some one else. It is always good for a laugh when some old fart partner stiffly dances  biggrin  Our firm cannot go back to one place because a mailroom guy and a secretary was caught getting it on in a back room at the party site.
Free food and booze in moderation is always good, so I look at the party as it should be, a form of thank you for your work.  cool  Of course, while one can get themselves in trouble at them, but better is to use them to develop contacts for assignments, talk to your peers you don't often see, or talk to that hottie you have been dying to meet.

In principle, I make many excuses and go through all the trouble to avoid them. If you wanna know why, see the Xmas Grinch thread. But after reading the response by LTBEWR in that thread, and after having the boss pressure me into it, I thought I'll let this one go...

Besides, there will be lots of alcohol, the hot colleague with the Aussie accent, and only few of the annoying aspects about the whole thing. If they start playing xmas songs, I could just start having my twitches and sing out a different song very loud Big grin

Yeah I'll go, there's nothing funnier than watching other people getting absolutely bladdered, and then mouthing off about their bosses to their bosses and fucking their colleagues. So many people 'leave' shortly after....

Hate them - I keep my business and social lives separate, so you would never find me at a staff Christmas Party unless, of course, my employer decided to charter a BA 747 and took us all on a shopping trip to USA or Canada!

Christmas partys were fantastic, at least the ones I used to have with Argos back at home. You can get up to allsorts and get away with it - as you can't remember, and nor can anyone else!  Smile

I'm missing my xmas party this year due to work, but it's a black tie and ball-gown event, which I never find as funny as a "normal" party anyway. Saying that, the food and drink is all free and the £5 for tickets all goes to charity so I can't complain  Wink We're having a departmental knee's up night and a paintballing day in January anyhoo Big grin

Our office hasn't had a "holiday" ( we can't say the dreaded word Christmas) party since 2003 - thanks to the blockheaded management that took over in 2001. Instead of letting the group plan an execute the party the majority wanted to have, after two years of "you WILL attend our meticulously planned and formatted party," last year the majority voted to have no party. I suspect the same thing will take place this year.

Well, the CBC has great Xmas parties - usually two in the same day : the first one from 4 to 6 for the daytime employees, the second from 10 to midnight for evening workers. Because of the hours of my shift, I've been going to both events for the last few years. It's always a fun challenge, getting around the "2 drink tickets maximum" they give each employee...

But here's a twist : this year I have a partner who works for a trucking company in SW Ontario - so I'm going as 'his date'...and I have no idea what to expect - rather than allow myself to get completely drunk, I think I'll be kind of vigilant for trouble from strangers who don't like what they see...

So, anyone care to share experiences of your partner's work party...?

Lucky
