For The Xmas Grinches!

Thu Nov 24, 2005 8:28 am

Is there anybody else who cannot stand:

(1) The whole festive atmosphere
(2) The fact that you cannot buy a normal birthday card because the entire card shop has been raided with xmas cards since October
(3) All the people who go shopping for xmas everyday for 2 months prior to the event
(4) All the lovely dovey couples who get smoochey woochey while you have no better half to spend the evening with
(5) The xmas music in every bloody store you go to
(6) Your colleagues who start whistling xmas songs for 4 weeks
(7) The way in which retail starts commercialising and robbing people of their money for an even that used to be about appreciating non-materialistic things in life.

....if so... then join my club  devil

I know about one a.netter already... anybody else?

I'll join the club.

I can't stand the fact that Thanksgiving has yet to pass, and all I see are Christmas decorations and tress already up.

I hate hearing nons-stop Christmas music, it just wears on my nerves!

I hate getting gifts. I'm an American teenager, I don't need anything!

I hate trying to figure out what to get people.

I'm also glad that being a freshmen in college I don't have to see which one of my new friends actualy likes that crap since we're all gonna be on break!

Christmas... ugh, you'll find me locked away in my room.

I'm with ya all the way . . . .

Fighting through any store or mall for weeks and weeks way before even Thanksgiving is done . . .

Christmas Trees every flippin place you turn . . .

All moochers standing in front of every store for every cause under the sun . . . as if we don't front them enough tax money in the first place . . .

So, I'm there . . .

The only benefit to Christmas - for me - it's double time pay and the food is usually really damn good . . .

5. Totally agree with you on this. ITS ANNOYING!!!!! And you get to hear the same songs over and over. Time to write some new xmas songs.
6. Same reason for number 4

I hate Christmas too.

I got my girlfriend her gift back in September, and gave it to her when I got it.. Also, I specifically requested that I get NOTHING for Christmas. I refuse to be part of the whole thing.. Presently, I am trying to get scheduled to work Christmas eve and day.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

I'm happy for those who are happy and get a rise out of the whole holiday season. Being a minority in a Christmas culture I do feel there is too much XMAS music and pushing some of the religious facets on me. The Little Drummer Boy is pushing it down my throat. Many of my people have been persecuted, enslaved and killed because they did not tow the line. Enjoy it but don't flaunt it!

Yes, there is way too much crass commercialism. And, Madison Ave and the Bush administration are trying to sell us the concept of holiday seasons as they were for the fortunate back in the 50's...Big fireplaces, lavish material gifts, big ticket items, and plenty of abundant food. Today, there are fractured families and the video generation of kids open their gifts and are hyper and bored by 9:00 AM. XMAS morning and then these dysfunctional families invade the movie theatres and bother us at the airport flying to see Mickey Mouse. Another overated holiday which is as useful as tits on a bull is New Years. It's sad, a lot of people bank their entire future on 6 weeks out of the year and spend like our Federal government does and gets another day older and deeper in debt! And then, they realize their life has not changed and they take it out on the rest of us.

Now, I love Thanksgiving! It is not a Christian or Pegan holiday, is family centered and revolves around great food. Happy Holidays to all and to all, a good night!

For many of us, Christmas is a difficult time. It is often a time of reflection of the good and bad of the past year or past experiences at Christmas. There is the social pressures of family and others and to be happy at this time, no matter your inner problems. there are the problems of lonelyness for those without a partner. The commercialism has gone to such extremes to destroy the intention of the holiday - the celebration of the birth of Christ for Christians.
Yet, I still try to be positive. I hope for and feel good when I get gifts I can use or need. I feel even better when a gift I give is something the other person needs, something they wouldn't buy for themselves or helps them enjoy their life wether it be a family member or a toy to a child I may never meet. I like some of the shopping where I get the right stuff and finding it for a fair price. I like the food, especially mom's homemade from scatch cookies, and other goodies. I like seeing people I don't usually see. I like that for a while we can get along and be nice to each other.
So change the channel on the radio or break out your CD's/I-Pod, try to look positively at this time and try to enjoy this holiday for the broader meaning it has taken on.

Sorry FlyAUA, but totally disagree with you!

I know Christmas is over commercialised, but I love the whole season. Was beside my local garden store yesterday which has already opened what they calltheir "Christmas Village" and couldn't resist visiting. Oh the joy... that smell of Christmas trees, the look of joy on children's faces.

I'll never understand how there can be people who don't like this wonderful season! I revert to being a child every December, and with my first child due in late January, I'm already excited about the coming Christmas periods as I'm sure they'll regain a lot of their magic and innocenc for me when I live it through my son or daughter's eyes.

Season's greetings to all!

Christmas is less about jingle bells and more about jingle cash-registers - mind you nowadays they bleep more than jingle. Any references to the birth of Jesus Christ are seldom seen or heard.

And staff who dress up as elves or wear Santa hats, and think that just because it is Christmas they can kiss you or make fun of you.

I am with you all the way. My flat is a totally Christmas-free zone. Stuff the turkey, the cards, the tree and decorations. And my name is not Scrooge too!

Oh yes ! absolutely , I loathe Xmas at the best of times , but this year it will be even worse , I will be stuck in Europe which means Xmas in winter instead of being able to have a picnic on the grass in the sun which I would do at home - I am 18000 km from friends & family and desperately homesick - I miss the beach , I miss the sun and all the things I usually associate with this time of year - paint me green and call me a grinch .

The one thing that really annoys me is the television commercials. They put toy commercials on one after another.. How many Barbie's and baby dolls do kids need? I don't mind the ToysRus commercial because that was one of my favourites as a kid  Cool  Wink, but the rest really get on my nerves.

Try to tell this to a couple of parents that have their kid in our gastro-ward since his birth in March. The kid is dependent on TPN (total parenteral nutrition), and the parents had hoped he could at least spend some hours home on Xmas. Seems not to be the case, and the parents are distraught. Maybe we should tell them also that Xmas is only another day...

Sorry is this seems a bit harsh, but I find it very sad to read so many complaints about cards and busy shops and colleagues whistling christmas songs - so many people would give everything to be able to enjoy the party, the family and the season like you all do. I feel for them, and the least I can do is enjoy my Xmas as much as I can.

While I do not like the overcommercialization of the holiday, I do like Christmas overall. It's a great time to get together with family and just hang out and joke and remember what's important. It's one of the few times my entire family all have time off and everybody is in the same general area, so that's the main reason I like it. That and some of the music, as long as it is not overplayed  Smile

no it's not , it is soooooo much worse than just another day - ask anyone in the emergency services when the peak period is for domestic violence , or for suicide . Commercial pressures are piled on people earlier and earlier each year to spend , spend , spend - no wonder relationships come under more severe stress at this time of year than at any other - and for people who are on the outside of the mainstream ( the unemployed , the homeless , or the lonely) this time of year only increases their feelings of isolation

IMHO there are two adverts that define christmas........

Coca-Cola - Holidays Are Comin'
Andrex - I wish it could be xmas every day

I hate xmas, but love those ads. Pitty the andrex one got axed?

Christmas is usually the only time people take time off to enjoy winter, my favorite season, therefore I don't mind it much. I actually like most of it.

Another bandwagon jumper-onner here to the original post.

The whole comeercialization thing has a has a life of its own and has officially eclipsed the event which has spawned it. I say this as a secular sort, I might add.

I don't know if it's because today's "uber capitalism" has reached full maturation or what, but I still find the laser-beam like fixation with retailers profits, blabbed all over the media ad-nauseum, to be in utter tacky bad taste....always have....

I can't stand it anymore.

I can just here it now ( if we were to extrapolate our vapid interest in money decades forward ) 'Cancer curing herb cause lower pharmaceutical earning forcasts, analysts say.....'

no it's not , it is soooooo much worse than just another day - ask anyone in the emergency services when the peak period is for domestic violence , or for suicide .

Very true, but this is something many people "in the mainstream" as you put it will either intentionally block out, or not realise is even happening. It's unfortunately but it's the fact. This time of the year is indeed the worst time of the year for the amount of people that suffer from depression, and also, suicide rates go skyrocketing. So go on you xmas cheerleaders... tell me xmas is still a good thing  mischievous

The best day of the year is January 2nd. That means the preceding two months of crap is over for another year.
