How Can I Find A Job In Dubai?

Fri Nov 25, 2005 7:58 pm

As the title says.
06/07 shall (...) be our last year in the Emerald Isle and we would like to emigrate to the UAE, preferably Dubai.

Any a.netters currently expatriated in the GCC region ?
If so, how did you manage it ? tips ?

Why don't you just go to Emirates Recruitment? (dot com!) ...

Could be fun working for that airline  Smile

Not to rain on your parade or anything Will, but I'm curious about the fascination so many people have with the UAE.

Never having been there myself, I'm hardly in a position to question or comment, but I've always imagined it to be very Las Vegas-like. From what I've seen (on TV etc) and heard, lots of shopping and gaudy architecture are the mainstays of the Emirates. I'm sure there's more, but what is it exactly about the region that attracts so many people?

I spent 5 days there this time last year. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Wouldn't mind working there myself but I'm too bloody old now

Would a western woman (i.e. your wife) be able to carry on your western life style if you were to move there?

This is a point to consider, I think. My wife would never tolerate the restrictions imposed on women on some arabian countries.

I am sure she could do that!

No, I am talking about dressing, not using a Shador in the head, etc. I know tourists have no problem there (so I have heard), but living there must be quite different (I think).

There are no such rules in dubai infact you will most probably see women in mini-skirts all over the place. There is a restriction in place in sharjah which is the emirate adjacent to dubai where most people live, you cannot wear a dress which is smaller than knee height (applies for both men and women).

Thanks for clarifying that. We have friends (germans) that lived in Saudi Arabia in the 90's and the rules were very strict there. They were mostly confined to the company's buildings and women mostly had to endure some harsh conditions. Did not know if it would apply still or elsewhere.

My mum had terrible experiences in egypt, just for being blonde and looking western, she got harassed all the time. I know Dubai is more western than egypt but maybe there's some of that in Dubai, if so your wife will not enjoy it.

Alot of people who have never been to the UAE might see that since it is in the "middle east" that it is gonna be alot like Saudi Arabia, Yemen or Iraq but it isn't. The UAE gives more freedoms to it's residents than anywhere else in the "middle east". When my family went their to visit last year (April 2004), our private driver/tour guide named Mohammed (sp?) who is from Pakistan also said that it has the lowest crime rate in the middle east region. He says that there are too many cops and too little crime... I saw quite a few arab women not wearing head dresses but than again, I also saw many with them. It is way safer than Los Angeles or New York in my opinion.

What is rules in regards to recreational drugs. Is it strict or very free. Both alcohol and cigarette smoking.

You might have to start putting in a request for transfer.

My sister (thirteen years younger than me, in her mid twenties), who is currently doing her masteral in history of Islamic countries and speaks both Arabic and Turkish, had a bad incident in Cairo two years ago, when she spent there one month with a language school to improve her language knowledge.
She is also blonde, quite tall and has grey-green eyes, but she didn't dress provokingly, no mini skirt, but trousers and a long sleeved blouse.
One day on her way to the school, while taking a shortcut through one of the traditional quarters, she got her way blocked and assaulted by three local teenagers / young men, who grabbed her crotch and breasts.
Only thing was that these guys didn't realise that she had at this time a blue belt in Karate (in fact she is in top shape, she has the brown belt now, is also doing Aikido and works out 5-6 times a week for several hours). She KO'ed one, turned another one into a eunuch with a wellplaced kick where it hurts most and broke the third one's nose. The trio decided to break off the engagement after this and run for it.

On the other hand this year she did a semestral break internship with the Saudi embassy in Berlin and told me that she was treated very well (she received a recommendation letter by the ambassador and they gave her a cheque over several hundred Euros, though the internship was planned to be unpaid, just for experience).

I also considered Dubai due to the high salaries they are paying for licenced AMEs from Europe, but my girlfriend doesn't want to go there, because Filipino nurses are getting paid there based on Filipino salaries, and she would have a huge loss of income compared to her salary in Ireland.

Like I said, I haven't even been there. In fact, the closest I've been to Dubai is where I am right now - Bombay!
You too went there on holiday or something. That's very different from living there.
