Former World Rally Champion Richard Burns, Dies

Sat Nov 26, 2005 6:49 pm

Very sad news indeed. One of the best rally drivers ever. And only 34 year's old too

Wow, what a day of mourning over in the UK...First George Best, now Richard Burns...sad indeed, these greats going too early.

I didn't realise he was that ill. I knew about the brain tumour, but I didn't realise it had become terminal. Damn.

I'm completely and utterly speechless.. I knew he had the tumor but never ever thought it was that bad. I'm shocked. What a bad year for British Rallying, loosing two of its best.

It was really a shock to me when I read this. It's a shame. He was too young and a great talent, too.

May God bless his soul. R.I.P. Richard Burns

RIP RIP ... what a sad loss. He was too young to die, and had too much left to achieve in both his chosen sport and in life.

I don't want to stir up a hornet's nest but I was outraged on Saturday that the BBC was going on and on about Best with hardly a word for Richard Burns.

I find this most disgraceful and shameful.

Back to Richard, it is indeed a great loss for motorsport in general.
I only hope he is currently battling it out with Senna and other greats who unfortunately were taken before their time.

That can be said about more than just about the BBC too...

Best brought on all his problems by himself too, I never felt sorry for him - shame he put his friends and family through it all - its them you have to feel sorry for.

Disgusting really.

I actually went home last night and re-read his autobiography Driving Ambition. Particularly sad now reading the last chapter where he talked about his future ... and his frequent mentions of Michael Park in the book. He had so much to look forward to in life too ... never mind his driving career.

Looking at those photos I was particularly reminded of the Safari rally which was his first WRC win. They rallies nowadays are "soft" compared to the Safari.

We can only hope they're running rallies up there ... Richard Burns / Michael Park v Possum Bourne / Roger Freeth? (be one great rally ...)

When I heard the news about Richard Burns being diagnosed with brain tumor, I thought that it must be something he can win. After all, he was only 32! In fact, all this season, I was looking for news on his comeback.

I just visited his website and looking at photos of Richard Burns, he still looks so live, it was almost impossible for me to realize that he's gone.

You're absolutely right. OK, every premature death is sad in its own way and both Richard Burns and George Best died too soon, but I heard all kinds of crying over Best and his dealing (or not dealing) with alcoholism and how it was the main reason for the deterioration of his health, BBC played over and over that video when Best was talking rubbish on TV totally drunk and everybody should feel sorry for him.

On the other side, we have Richard Burns who could have easily be his son and who fought such a horrible disease and almost nothing was said.

You're free to do so. I'm really angry, too.
