Images From California: Nothing And Nowhere

Mon Nov 28, 2005 10:07 am

When most people hear California, images of bland suburban strip malls, jammed freeways, hot sandy beaches, Hollywood, and Palm Trees come to mind.

But there is more than just that. There is the forgotten Central (San Joaquin) Valley, which is more fitting of being somewhere in the Midwest than in CA.

Here are some pictures I took over the weekend. They are basically of "nothing" out in the country.

Considering that I live in an endless sea of suburban strip malls, concrete and asphalt, crowds, and traffic, seeing these places was a sort of tonic for the nerves, mind, and soul.

And to think that farmland is probably worth at least 5x what farmland in the Midwest is.

Yes, Bakersfield is a very forgotten place. Glad I don't live there anymore.

Matt -

I saw an article (somewhere) about the use of San Joaquin River water... and how very little of it is actually available for use within the San Joaquin valley due to large aqueducts and dam projects.

The river itself no longer flows continuously from its source in the mountains to the San Francisco Bay.

Kinda reminds me of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale/West Palm Beach area versus the Everglades. Same distinction.

Great pictures Matt D!  Cool

Actually the Central Valley looks a lot like Texas. Most of the midwest (Illionois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota) has a lot more trees.
The Central Valley looks more like the southern Great Plains (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas).
