Rhaa! Stupid Windows XP!

Mon Nov 28, 2005 7:22 pm

So, it appears that Windows XP is as foolish now as it ever was!

Both of my rhaa-ish new PC's come equipped with Nforce chipsets on their motherboards, with on-board network ports.

It appears that XP Pro does not have the appropriate drivers for the on-board netowrking on the Nforce mobo, how foolish is that??????

Linux had them for the other PC with the same motherboard! Though admittedly Linux was unable to find the drivers for the graphics card, and I was forced to manually edit the foolish Xorg.conf file by hand!

This is a Rhaa of a situation! If I had wanted to work for a living I would have gotten a real job!

You're telling me!

I never work on mondays!

This will be a shock to the system - I might just plug in my old P4 3.2 Ghz and make it last until XP Sp3 gets released. Who needs 64-bit dual-core processors and 4Gb of ram anyway ....  Smile

XP...foolish? You dont say!

Cant you just get drivers off the manufacturers website?

I recently switched to Windows XP 64bit, and my 6 year old printer was supported by default drivers, my 1 year old printer was not, and the manufacturers refuse to make a 64bit driver for it  Sad

I could, but that would involve downloading them on another PC, sticking them on a CD/DVD/Pen drive and then move them over to the other PC.

My preferred solution now is to stick in an old 3Com NIC and be done with it!  Smile

Well it wouldn't have been ... had it worked!

Not only did the 3Com card foolishly not work, but when i finally downloaded the chipset drivers they didn't work either. Rhaaa!

Now I'm all out of ideas ....  Smile

Listen, foolish rhaat!

Not only did I manage to get a PCI card installed in that time, but i've also taken it out and put another one in, and got it working now! Ha!

And I've also edited the aliases file on the mail server to remove a foolish employee who left on friday, and recompiled the aliases database, and er, loads of other stuff, and I've been for lunch!

Listen, I work at a pace that suits me!  Smile

In all fairness I have had a lot of other stuff to do in between, I've just been tinkering with it while I'm at my desk.

These are just two new PC's which were ordered, and I've decided to claim them for my own office to replace my P4 based systems.

It's just a bit more hassle than it's worth now though, getting my multi-screen setup on an ATI card working under X is proving troublesome (even though it worked fine with my GeForce card) and my windows box is being a pain in the arse with regards to Windows support for the hardware .....

Anyway, my boss thinks I do a stellar job!  Silly

And I fully expect so, and i thought I was taken the bitching quite sportingly!  Smile

I don't post half of this stuff here seriously, it was just a way of killing 5 mins while XP was installing.

It's all in the name of fun, and having a laugh at myself is important IMHO.

The infamous thread about my squeaking mouse still haunts me at the water cooler to this day .......  Silly

nForce was released after XP. What were you really expecting, miracles? Im betting that your Linux install media vastly postdates your XP install media.

Actually, the version of Win XP I was installing was XP Pro Sp3 beta, the latest RC. This is stated in the TechNet documentation as having support for Nforce 4 chipsets, but clearly the support is not yet complete as it would not recognise the on-board NIC, though everything else including the NForce RAID was installed as expected.

So no, my Linux Install media does not vastly postdate my XP install media, I use Slackware Linux, currently v 10.2, which was released in mid-spetember. The DVD's I got from MS the other day containing XP Pro with SP3 are dated 18th November - hence my surprise at the lack of proper hardware support despite MS claiming that the Nforce 4 drivers in SP3 were classed as production code, and in fact provided by Nvidia themselves rather than MS generic equivalents.

I was having some strange things happen on my computer running Windows XP Professional (SP2) lately, with bizzare system lockups and other weird things happening to my system. Fortunately, cleaning out the system interior with a computer-quality compressed air blaster and reseating the AGP graphics card solved the problem.  bigthumbsup
