Any Rap Wars Anymore?

Wed Nov 30, 2005 4:36 am

If you recall in the '90's it was East Coast vs. West Coast. Primarily Tupac and Dre. Vs. Notorious BIG. Tupac and Biggie are now dead because of it. Lately you don't hear much of 'wars' going on like they were 10 years ago. Are there any new rivals? I've heard something about Ja Rule vs (I think Jay-Z). But they are as amplified or glorified like Tupac and Biggie were..Any thoughts?

Who cares? Rap sucks.

Give me bands who actually play instruments (programming computers is not the same thing), write music with melodies and countermelodies, sing instead of bloviating illiterately into a mike, and who sing about other things than how much of a stud they think they are or how he would like to kill someone.

I didn't care about rap wars in the '90's and, amazingly enough, I don't care about them now.

Well, if you look at what the rap war caused, i think youll understand why the wars nowadays are much more shall i say traquile. Since in the war b/w tupac and Biggy, they both ended up dead, i think that the rap world took a chil pill and decided to be mo' aprreciating and not hatin!

"Rap wars" such as the Biggie vs. Tupac thing are a thing of the past. There are some rivalries between rappers, but it's pretty much limited to taking shots at each other via the media or in their songs. Rappers nowadays realize you can't buy more bling if you're dead. Some of these rivalries include:

Ja Rule vs. the world (or at least Emenem, Dr. Dre., 50 Cent, Busta Rymes, etc.)
The Game vs. 50 Cent (even the two were in the same "crew")
Jay-Z vs. Nas

I think someone in the Rap world should make war on all the over-commercialized 'booty rap' or party-rap groups that are currently dominating. I'm definately an east-coast, alternative rap listener, though I like a few southern rappers (David Banner, Outkast).

David Banner is sick. Him, Mike Jones and Luda are my favorite.

50 Cent is still involved in quite a few rap wars. Mostly with The Game and still Ja Rule. Eminem still fueds with almost anyone who breathes. The fueds are out there but they are not quite as noticible as before. Nas has beef with a lot of people. Go to any music sharing program and search "diss songs" and the latest batch usually show up.

Now that every no-talent hack with a grill and baggy pants can babble into a microphone, rap wars ain't what they used to be. 'Round here, when one turd "busts a cap" in another, it doesn't get investigated very thoroughly. I call those "misdemeanor" murders.

The Game vs. 50 Cent?

but I saw at least two video clips where these two fine gentlemen were rapping together? All I remember is that The Game was singing with a terribly jacked mouth, much worse then later, I think.

The usual, "Rap isn't music and no talent is necessary" crowd  Yeah sure. People who say this have little exposure to the history and non-mainstream artists that rap about social issues and not violence. Listen to Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, even some of the non-mainstream work or Tupac and Nas. They have a lot to say. By the way have you ever heard a real rap battle (and not the kinds shown in 8 Mile)? Not everybody can do that.

I'll give you Ludacris but Banner and Mike Jones?? Maybe like 2-3 good songs between them. I'm not much into all that Crunk music anyway.

About Rap wars, it's mostly gone something like in the past, where artists "keep it on wax" and don't really go any further.

Mdsh00, you can try a million times, but people on here (and in real life) still refuse to open their minds up. A Tribe Called Quest, Black Star, (old) Common, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, its all the same to them as Lil Jon.

Just cause young jeezy is sellin today doesnt mean he will next year, while copys of Illmatic still roll of the shelf 12 years later, that should give people an idea of the difference....

I don't wish to sound like a stereotypical backpacker but I've given up caring what peoples perceptions of hip-hop are, I personally think "underground" or "alternative" hip-hop is probably alot better off without people who are closed minded enough to dismiss a huge genre of music based on the perception they have of it gained from MTV etc.

In one of the "Naked Gun" movies, there is a scene in the background where you hear the clerk talking on a phone and he says something to the effect of "Look Mac, killing a gang member is only a fifteen dollar fine. Just mail it in wouldja?"

If only it were really like that.

Bought into it hook, line and sinker I see - those deaths do bother me, I still lose sleep over them being gone.

I like Ludacris as well....he has both entertaining feel good rap and meaningful songs. Tupac was awesome...also Dre's Chronic 2001 album was good but alot of the new rappers SUCK BADLY. Out of all of them maybe only Luda and a couple of others are still good. Kanye West = teh suck that guy's songs are so annoying I can't even believe how somebody can come up with that crap. Also R.Kelly sucks and so does new Jay-z, nelly, 50 cent and eminem. Basically most rappers that used to be good now suck. 50 cent's stuff is really good for clubs and parties though...

Pretty much what Lil' Jon does. You know, always shouting the same two words, "Whaaaaat?" and "OKAY!!!!"  Silly .

They are actually good friends to some extent, with both in G-Unit. I still suspect that their "battle" is still just to increase sales, nothing more.
Personally, I have pretty much overcome my rap-period when I listened quite a lot to Em, Snoop, Busta and all the typical late-90's rap, but nowadays, I hardly listen to modern-day rap (except Xzibit and some Ludacris), but preferrably some old-school rap, like Eazy-E, NWA or the early Dr. Dre (guess that's the influence of GTA:SA  Wink ).

DAL767400 pretty much nailed it. All those club hits that come out of the South are called "Crunk Music"

I'm not sure what he meant by using 'Crunk'

He may mean Swisha House/Screwed, which is a southern (primarily East Texas) type of rap.
