Smoking Age In UK Could Increase To 18.

Mon Dec 05, 2005 1:02 am

Ministers are considering raising the minimum legal age for buying tobacco in England from 16 to 18, the Department of Health has said.

But is it going to make the slightest bit of difference?

I say that the UK should borrow a classic anti-smoking ad from the states. A lady has a hole in her throat and is talking about what smoking did to her, and then takes a puff of a cigarette, through the hole in her throat. I was about 12 when I saw that, and that commercial had a HUGE impact on me at least.

Apparently, that was one of the most effective anti-anything commercials of all time.

We have had those sorts of commercials in the UK before, we also have fairly shocking ones one at the moment.

As a nonsmoker, I dont see why I have to sit through those commercials. They are very shocking and I should have a right not to be bombarded with them.

The UK has shocking images plastered all over Cigarette boxes at the moment, as well as information about what smoking does. That targets the people who smoke - that should be the boundry of this sort of compaign.

I'd wager a guess say that if it hadn't been so easy to buy smokes as a teenager, and if my high school didn't have designated smoking areas (hey, it was the 70's and California), I probably wouldn't have taken up the habit.

As A smoker I don't see why i should have to either. I choose to smoke and feel that this kind of add is trying to take away my freedom of choice. We all know the reported dangers of smoking.
Can you imagine how much revenue would be lost by the government if we were all to stop smoking tomorrow?.

won't make a damned bit of difference unless penalties for sale to minors are made heavier and enforced.

There are too many corner shops who don't give a toss about the laws and happily sell alcopops and cigs to fourteen year olds. They need smacking hard.

It's the same thinking as with hard drugs. The user isn't the problem, it's the supplier.

Plus they can use cigarette machines... but isn't the huge tax in the UK keeping teenagers from smoking? Their for less than a pound here, but seven (?) in the UK... I cant imagine continuing a habit which costs so much.

Generally not widely available here (mainly in pubs), but, for example, are more widespread in countries such as Germany.

They aren't banning them from smoking, just from buying cigarettes. It won't of course make the slightest bit of difference, after all, where there's a will, there's a way. I've lost track of the number of times I've been asked to buy alcopops by gaggles of Chavs outside the offy, and whilst I personally have refused, I've seen others who have happily honoured their requests. The same will happen with cigarettes.

Its also illegal in the UK to buy alcohol and tobacco with the intention of supplying a person under the age of 16/18 with it.

Its not illegal for people under the age to buy or attempt to buy, or use.

True, but there are still people out there who don't care, and after all, how do you prove to the shopkeeper that you aren't buying it for your own use, as long as you're not seen handing over the goods? The people that are happy to buy are probably those that did the same thing themselves when they were under age.

I'm assuming you mean that the illegality of the transaction falls on the shopkeeper for selling to them, rather than them actually buying the goods?

I can't see it making a difference. All the people my age who smoke didn't wait until they were 16, they were much younger. If they find a shop that will sell cigarettes to them, or someone who will buy on their behalf, then changing the law to 18 won't change a thing.

We have plenty of adverts trying to stop smoking, but peer pressure and the desire to look 'cool' is still the biggest factor in underage smoking. Until that can be stamped out, underage smoking will still occur!

I started smoking when I was 8. I remember a mate got me to have a cigarette. We bought some and I had them in my pocket when I went home. My dad could smell it on me and found the packet of cigarettes and made me eat them all.

I never gave up though although I still want to.

But is it? The way it was explained on the news today was that it would be illegal for anyone under 18 to buy cigarettes, but not to smoke them. Somehow I can't see them arresting under 19's for smoking...
