Barcelona is a stunning city, especially at night. A few years ago I made a weekend trip to Barcelona and I was shown around by fellow A.net member Mighluss, we met at noon at the airport and went spotting (stunnig spots, especially the one at the beach), later we had dinner in "Thomas Tappas Bar" (probably the best tappas restaurant in Barcelona) and then we walked through the city at night and had a few drinks. Barcelona is perfect when you like nightlife, architecture and good food.

Actually I like every Spanish city/region on the main land. No matter if I was in Barcelona, Alicante, Valencia or Malaga, it is always a pleasure to be there.

One tip: Avoid the tourist spots like Playa de Palma (Majorca), Playa de Ingles (Gran Canaria), Playa den Bossa (Ibiza), etc. There you will meet more German, British and Dutch tourists than Spaniards.

When I went earlier in the year, we visited some nice places, but we only spent 2 days there. We visited Valencia, Benidorm, and some other unknown out of the way places. All were nice.

Absolutely right there.

Barcelona is a must see. Madrid is also spectacular, as are many other cities and areas in Spain. My favourite is the hinterland of Andalucía - often called the frying pan of Europe. In Summer 115°F is not uncommon. Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, Jaen - all wonderful cities.

Its a pity you only have a week!

I've only been to Barcelona myself. Great city and it's right on the Med. Lot's of history and great places to eat, drink and relax. It's a great place for night life and to unwind just as Patrick said in reply 1. The only thing that I found to be annoying after awhile was the constant Gaudi inspired architecture. It's interesting at first, but after a while it's just too much of the same thing. My fondest memory was sitting on the beach at 1AM, having a couple of beers and smokes. Pure heaven.

It was in Barcelona that I discovered café cortado, an espresso "cut" (from the Spanish and Portuguese cortar) with a small amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. Delicious.

Ronda, Marbella, Algeciras, and over to Gibraltar.

There's a very nice restaurant at the foot of the Roman bridge/aqueduct in Ronda which does an excellent roast pig, and it's supposedly the oldest bullring in Spain.

Depends on your intrests.

If you are really, really into Medival history then Cordoba and Granada are not to be missed! Gibralater & Sevilla are fabolouse too.

My favorite city was Salamanca, wonderful. Pity we there only for a day & a night.

You could also easialy spend a week in Madrid and sourronds, Toledo, El Estoriall, Valley of the Fallen etc.

Perhaps you should sort out an airfare first? I belive Madrid & Baecelona have non stops from US, but you might get a better deal via UK, France, even Portugal depending exactlywhere you are coming from. You could let that decide what part of Spain to visit, its probably as good a way as any, for a week.

Gibraltar

Sorry folks, but Gibraltar is a dump, and Marbella isn't much better. Ronda is fine, but never having been there, I cannot comment on Algeciras.

Barcelona is indeed nice, and I have only heard good things about Madrid but have never been there.

Patrick is right, skip those typical tourist spots.

I have been to Barcelona, and other places in Catalonia. Barcelona is a nice city, but there is not that much to do there, so I would not recommend staying for more than 2 days. Up farther north, there are some very nice towns and beaches. In Catalonia, I recommend going to Girona, Figueres and Roses. Girona was the best city I went to. I stayed in a very nice villa in a town called Blanes.

Definitely get to Barcelona, and try to stay a few days there. If possible, rent a car or take a train down the eastern coast and hit some of the resort towns along the way.

Albecete is great...stay at the Paradores (sp?) which is a hotel, and owned by the government.

Cadiz and Tarifa are great places to see. If you go to Tarifa, you might consider a 1-day tour to Morocco as well.
And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

Barcelona!!!

I totally agree with everyone above that has stated the same. I was studying abroad and after my program ended got to spend 4 months travelling around Western Europe.

Two seperate occasions we cancelled plans to visit certain countries and cities just so we could return to BCN!

Stay at the Sea Pointe hostel. It's located a few hundred feet from the Med!

Good luck!  Smile

Depends on your perspective! I thought Gib was a highlight of our tour of Spain & Portugal this year. Particularly if you are into the whole history of long distance travel and not just aviation. I thought it was time very well spent.
