Linux And Wi-Fi

I found a shop that teaches you to rebuild computers and gives you a free one after so many hours of volunteering. They install Linux on their computers. I want a laptop but how does Linux work with Wi-Fi? If I find a place with a wireless internet connection, can I connect or would it be easier to reformat the hard drive and install Windows?

Windows will always be more user friendly.... I'm using SuSe 10 with GNOME and I can easily connect to any wi-fi network. To search for networks, type this into any linux console:

iwscan
