Going To Jordan For School, Any Advice?

Tue Dec 06, 2005 4:02 am

I will be going to Jordan soon for Medical School (its a lot cheaper than the US or Europe).
I've been there a couple of times, but didn't stay there for a long time. Any recommendations/advice?

Thank You

Will it be at an American University in Jordan?

The reason I ask is because I'm not sure an education from Jordanian university would be recognized in the US. I know it wouldn't be in Canada, in fact the only post-secondary education recognized in Canada has to be either from a Canadian or an American university.

AUA (American University of Amman) won't be opening for another four or five years... The alternative is the AUB (American University of Beirut), which is considered the best uni in the Middle East, and is recognised in Canda and the USA.

As for recommendations in Jordan - make friends fast. You won't really be able to do much if you don't know people to show you around Amman and to make sure you have a good time, and as soon as you have made Jordanian friends, your ready to go. I'm asumming your going to Jordan University, which is meant to be a very interesting place - 50,000 students IIRC, with all sorts of people ranging from the rich to the poor and from the religious to the satanic. It is an interesting place, in an interesting city, so enjoy it as much as you can - Amman is a great place if you know people who can show you around.

Any recommendations? Learn Arabic, probably. Can't hurt.

May I ask why you've chosen Jordan out of all the places in the world to go to medical school?

I know that they do accept foreign medical education from many countries. I used to work in a hospital, and we had plenty of foreign medical residents.

You can take a look at this if you're interested:

Thanks for asking though.

I will be attending Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, but I think I will be living in Amman (about and hour commute, I was told)
I will be asking you for places to go once I get there if you don't mind, plus I got a couple of friends over there.

No specific reason, but I wanted a different place than the US or Europe that is also relatively cheap; I knew a couple of people from there; I was impressed by the level of medical grads from there at the hospital I used to work at; and the Middle East is an interesting place, and I do intend to visit the neighboring countries while there.

How much cheaper is it there in comparison to the US? I know here at the University of Minnesota, the medical school annual tuition fee is about $24,000 excluding expenses. Also, U of M is usually pretty high when it comes to tuition rates, there has to be places cheaper in the US.
