What To Do And Expect In Greece?

Wed Dec 07, 2005 11:16 am

I am going to Athens, Greece this April and would just like to hear from some fellow A.netters what I should expect. We are staying at the Hotel Electra Palace and from what I've seen/heard its supposed to be very nice. Can anybody tell me what the weather will be like in April? Obviously there will be a ton to do in Greece, but we are only staying for a week and would like to hear what things you recommend we should definitely see and do. We are planning to visit some family that live in Greece (not sure exactly where). Any other general information and tips about traveling in Greece are welcome. Thanks!  Smile

Expect to find yourself in one of the most amazing countries in the world! Have have been in Greece four times. Twice on the island of Rhodes, once on Corfu and once in Athens. I went to Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games. Obviously, go ahead and visit the Parthenon, its really an amazing site. When I travel, I usually stay away from "tourist attractions", because I find that they are always crowded. Rather, I just spend the entire day roaming around the streets and enjoying the culture. I especially enjoy, walking along the narrow roads of many Greek cities, where you can actually see how the locals live. You can tell so much just from observing the life around you. As for Athens, I was stuck with a huge crowd of people from all over the world, so I wasn't able to enjoy peace and quite. But fortunately, I got an opportunity to go around the entire city.
Many people say that the most beautiful part of Greece are the islands, and with no doubt whatsoever, I completely agree. I have never seen more beautiful sights in my life!! Words cannot describe it at all. For me, Corfu is the most beautiful place in the entire world. Especially Paleokastritsa!! WOW!!
I'm sure that no matter where you go in Greece, you will find it a very beautiful country, full of history and culture.

Well after visitng Greece more than 10 times in the past few years I'd have to say try a Mythos and a Gyros, that's good for lunch. Get down to the local supermarket and grab some Retsina and some Ouzo for the evening and you'll be laughing!

I go to Greece every year for my vacations.
You have a lot to do there.
My tips are: take a stroll on the new pedestrian road that circle the archeological sites in center Athens. If there is a sunny day the best time is late afternoon, when the parthenon hill is full of golden light. Walk in the Anafiotika area (just down the parthenon) and when the sun goes down see all the lights of the city.
Don't miss the lycabettus hill: go on top and watch the panorama. Athens is very big. Plaka is a very touristic borough but nice for an evening walk. Or you can go to Exarchia for something more greek! The island are all beautiful. Maybe you'd better choose one with good air/sea connection, if you are not staying for a long time. Santorini is a must see, but I would go to Crete, especially in Xania. In april the weather should be very pleasant. My favourite anyway is Naxos (as my nickname tells) .

Thank you all for the great information! The islands sure sound great; maybe sometime in the future we'll go to one of them if we return for another visit. I'm really looking forward to all the delicious food and amazing sites! Thanks again guys

You should expect to find that all the street signs are in Greek.

You should expect to find that very few people outside of the touristy part of Athens speaks English.

You should expect to find that the roads in Athens and elsewhere are incredibly difficult to navigate as traffic is heavy and the number of one way roads make Atlanta look normal.

You should also expect to find the most amazing place you will ever visit in terms of historical significance and beauty...both in architecture and nature.

You should go see the Acropolis, the Navel of the World at Delphi, the battlefield monument at Thermopylae (where 300 men stood between our history and that which would have come). You should see the seashore and the islands (on your second trip if the first is too busy).

You should be ready to encounter a people that are initially stand-offish, but who are warm and humorous, kind and helpful to strangers, willing to give directions by hand and arm signals (and drawing in the dust on the ground) to the spot you show on the map as long as you are smiling with them.

You should be prepared for an incredible jousney. Have a great time.
