Favorite Beer

Fri Dec 09, 2005 5:01 am

This is exclusive to just beer. What brands, what times, with who, what memories? Any beers that aren't around much anymore that you used to like?

On principle, I enjoy a lot of working class old man type beers. I'm not sure why this is a "principle" of mine, but a lot of my memories from being a kid are of my grandpa or my dad drinking old beers like Schlitz, Old Style, PBR, and Hamms, and I dunno, I think I always thought when I would become an adult if I drank beer I would drink the kind of beer they did.

If I buy beer at the store and I just want beer and not much else matters, I'll buy Old Style. It's the beer of choice of my Pap, and it's also the beer of a true cubs fan, haha. I also enjoy PBR and other beers of that type. I get a lot of flak from my peers about drinking those kind of beers, but I dunno, I think they taste good and they're cheap.

My dad used to deliver beer like Hamms, Old Milwaukee, Schlitz, and the like before I was born. That stuff is hard to find anymore, but there is a dive bar in Iowa City that still sells Hamms, so whenever my dad comes up to visit we go there and have a can of Hamms together...it's kind of nice to share things like that with my dad, we don't have moments like that that often so I'll take them when I can get them, even if it involves beer.

Another cheap beer i drink is Busch Light, but thats more of a necessity than by choice. Every tuesday night myself and a few other mass comm graduate students go out after class to a place in downtown Iowa City called Sam's Pizza...they have 50 cent pints of busch light! And we all sit down together and drink and talk about mass communication, haha.

But I have palet for decent beer as well too. If i'm in the mood for "good" beer, I'll buy a 6 pack of Warsteiner, Blue Moon, Boulevard, Harp or Leinenkugels Honey Weiss. I also really enjoy Guinness. I visited the ole brewery @ St. James Gate in Dublin in 2004.

I generally enjoy drinking beer, and I try to experience as many different beers as possible.

now who's next!?

Among my favorites are (in no particular order):

Saranac Blackforest Ale
Shiner Bock
Pete's Strawberry Blonde Ale
Tecate
Dos Equis Lager
Labatt Blue (probably the best inexpensive beer available in my area)
Stella Atois

If any of those are available when I am out at a bar or restaraunt then I will be all over them.

It depends purely where I am. It's nice to try new local beers, but I always have my favourites. In portugal it's Sagres, in The Netherlands it's Bavaria, in Belgium I drink Jupiler, and at home in the UK - The Land Of Shit Beer, it has to be Stella, for no other reason than it's by far the best of the typical beers we get here. In fact 10 minutes ago I opened can of Stella No.1 of the night, as I have a fridge full of the stuff. Let a night of posting incoherent random nonsense on A.Net commence!

Oh wow... this reminded me of...
"Then I'm watching the hockey playoffs, I'm eating pretzels and I'm thirsty. I go out, I open the refridgerator door, and I can see a beer out of the corner of my eye. I grab it, I pull the cap off, I've almost scored and... SPPPPPP! Cranberry ale. Cranberry nut crunch f*cking ale.
Let me tell you something folks: cranberries and beer do not go together, okay? One's for bladder infections, one's for getting drunk.
I'm forty, I don't need to be standing in my kitchen tasting cranberries during a hockey game. I take a look at the label of my beer. You know who's on my beer label? Santa Claus is on my beer label! I swear to God! You know, Mike Ditka can be on my beer label, Dick Butkis, Cindy Crawford, they can all be on my beer label, not f*cking Santa, okay? Let's put the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy on there too, call it Pussy Ale while you're at it, go ahead. Oh my God... Pete's Brew, Pete's Wicked Brew, Pete's Wicked Summer Brew, who the F*CK is Pete? F*ck Pete!"

that is so funny , most Belgians wouldn't drink Stella if they were dying of thirst ( a bit like most Australians won't go near Fosters) and can't figure out why anyone would touch it . My 'local' here in BRU - the Beercircus - has a menu about 20 pages long - 19 pages of beer and one page of food ( which of course is all cooked in beer ) .... and guess what ... no Stella

Not quite, actually. Even though not as popular in Belgium as Jupiler (which is brewed by the same company, btw) it is still quite popular, and most people I know still rank it higher than other typical Belgian 'pils' beers like Maes, Primus or Crystal.

Usually those places focus on the 'special' beers, of which Belgium has an incredible selection, and so you won't easily find the likes of Stella, Jupiler and the others I mentioned on there.

Absolute favourite:
Caledonian Deuchars IPA

Almost as good:
Wells Bombardier
Badger Golden Champion
Wychwood Fiddler's Elbow
Young's Waggle Dance

If only lager is on offer, then it has to be Grolsch. I find Stella too dry and Carling too much like piss.

[edit: add Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier to the "Almost as good" list - that's bloody gorgeous]

My favorite beer is one that is so cold, you get small crystals of ice when you pour it out into a nice frosty mug.

This is way too hard. I love so many beers that I could never point out my favourite. Depending on my mood, I'll usually drink something darker such as an ale or stout, but if the weather is nice, then usually a hefeweizen or Corona. Just keep all those icky mass produced brands away from me such as Coors, Budweiser, MGD and lot ....  vomit
