Who Did This To My Money?

Fri Dec 09, 2005 9:32 am

Earlier this week when I was on my way to the airport, I stopped to withdraw cash at an ATM. On the back of one of the $20 bills was a message stamped in red ink and capital letters for all to see. It read, "ONE NATION UNDER GOD". I've been curious all this week about who, whether an individual or organization, would take the time to do this, as I am sure there are many more bills out there like this one. Also, isn't it illegal to deface money?

I for one have no problem with either "in God We Trust" or "One Nation Under God" because I feel that a vague reference to God does not constitute "establishment of religion". However, I can see the other point of view and quite frankly, if someone were to remove these phrases, I wouldn't be all that upset.

Now, thanks to imageshack, here is a picture I took of the bill (and no, I do not own a scanner).

Honestly, you could probably have your pick of one of many organizations or so-called 'establishments' that try to think of extreme ways of promoting this. I don't disagree with the meaning, but I can think of better ways to get your point across than to stamp money.

So, I don't know who did it but I'm sure there are many more like it.

I used to mark all my money with a green 2" concorde stamp.

There's about 200 bills out there with it on it. Anyone see one?

Hey, I know that website, and that would be a sneaky way to get more hits on your bills if the rest of the serial # was visable

No I haven't.

Very interesting concept. But isn't the average lifespan of a $1 bill something like 18 months to 2 years? So I imagine a $1 bill really moves around a lot and very quickly.

I was wondering why the serial # was incomplete.

That website mentioned is for users to track bills that they've had in their possession around the world. If the serial number is given, someone can manipulate the tracking function and screw up his numbers.

Nothing big, just for that website.
