Funny Shaped Countries Or States!

Sat Dec 10, 2005 1:27 am

Its kind of a coincidence that both the countries I was born in and the one I spent most of my life in have rather funny shapes... by that i'm talking about Switzerland and Costa Rica's seahorse shape!

http://www.lastfrontiers.com/maps/costa%20rica.jpg

http://lasig.epfl.ch/projets/germinal/images/Suisse.gif

any other country or state you would qualify as having an original funny shape

Quoting RootsAir (Thread starter):
about Switzerland

what I found fascinating is the map you found for Switzerland. If you look around OUTside Switzerland you see "Deutsches Reich" which includes ELSASS, Savoie having been French since 1860, the Kingdom Sardinia-Piemonte, the "Lombardo-Venezianisches Königreich ", both Kingdoms "now" part of the Kingdom of Italia "Regno d'Italia". And some remark about changes in 1918. Looks as if it is a map of about 1919/20 !

Many states borders in the USA are based on Latitude and Longitude marks, hense some have very straight lines for them. Others are geography particulary due to rivers and other bodies of water.

Fairly relative to this thread, we were talking about license plates in the saloon last night (Tennessee used to have their plates shaped like the state's shape). This led to a discussion of most-recognizable USA "state shapes".

We concluded that Tennessee and Florida are probably the most easily recognised shapes. Runner-ups included Texas, California, Nevada, Alaska and Michigan. Not necessarily in that order, and not very scientific, but fun over a few beers. Regards...jack

You have to be a bit creative, but if you combine Mozambique, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Eritrea, it looks sort of like some mutant mermaid gazing into the distance, with Somalia as the arm, and Djibouti as the eye.

In High School, for a Powder Puff football game (It's where girls play, for those of you who might not know) I got to design the half time show, for our marching band. I did a Tribute To Square States, and then had the lower left corner crunch inward to do Nebraska and the upper right do the same for Utah.

Do you realize how many American kids think it's an easy flight to Alaska and Hawaii? It's because of the where they're depicted on school maps!

I actually have a funny story - when I was younger remember you had those old maps that had like a sovereign on it or something at the top?

Well because of the shape of Iceland and it's location at the top of the map, I always thought it wasn't a country but some sort of coat of arms!

I was trying to find a google image of the fish superimposed over the coastline of the North Island and the canoe over the South - I have seen it somewhere and it makes it much easier to see the similarity ( lets face it - like most of these it is a pretty faint resemblance and anything that makes it easier to visualise has got to be a winner )

The opening credits of the Rolf Harris show on TV in the UK, oooh, hundreds of years ago, before you were born, showed Australia becoming Rolf's head and sitting upright, grinning.

Probably scared a lot of kids pissless! I can't look at a Map of Oz now without seeing Rolf, I probably need a few of Erikwilliams cakes to help get over the trauma!

there - got what I was talking about - if you compare this to the map of New Zealand below

edit

you have the North Island - the fish ( Te Ika a Maui )
the South Island - the canoe (Te Waka a Maui )
and Stewart Island - the anchor of the canoe

thanks Jafa39 - I was so busy googling 'te ika' that I didnt think about 'te waka' tried that and got what I wanted first time
