Who Says We Don't Get Winter In SoCal?

Mon Dec 12, 2005 6:54 am

Just thought I'd share this with you. The time of day, the trees, and the cloud formations, I thought this would make a nice winter picture to share with you all. Ok...so there's no snow. But still looks like a late winter afternoon to me. Who'd have ever thought a scene like this would exist in SoCal?

Merry Christmas.

Talk about Palm Springs, California area. Snow on the top of mountains... no snow on the ground. Sunny. No or little clouds. Those palm trees... Very nice winter scene there!

My ass that looks like winter. That looks as much like winter as a day on the beach. When its overcast, you have to chip an inch of ice and snow off your rig and pray you don't slide off the road on your commute into work in the morning. Thats winter.

I found a picture the other day of my avenue under an inch of ice. A freak hailstorm we had here a few years back, and I grabbed the camera to record it.

Taken in bloody July of all months!

Made a change from constant rain, I suppose.

You don't get winter in SoCal. I woke up to 2-4 inches of fresh powder, with it still falling at a decent clip (damn lake effect). Not to mention that nearly a foot is still on the ground.

Winter in SoCal means you turn on your heater when you put your top down on the Cobra convertible.

It sure is winter here in SoCal. Temps in the 60s, high clouds and hazy sunshine. This extreme winter weather is too much to handle. Can't wait till the warm days of summer return!

Amen, brother!. When I went out this morning to get my copy of the LA Times (without my slippers), my feet got chilly before I got back in the house.

Of course when I READ my copy of the LA Times, that warmed me right up again. Skyrocketing blood pressure will do that to ya!

You know you are from California when it's barely sprinkling rain and there's a report on every news station: "STORM WATCH"

I miss California winters, worst I ever had was a little frost on the lawn in the mornings......now I have to chip ice off my car

Yeah, but at least you have a reasonable expectation that the car (and it's windshield) will be there when you go out...

On the 6:00 PM news this evening, the first story was about how Toronto has been issued it's first Extreme Cold Weather Alert of the year for tonight, because the temp will reach -15C before the windchill factor which will make it feel like it's in the -20Cs.

In my home, I know "Old Man Winter" is dropping by for a visit in December when I wake up in the morning and see this on my kitchen windows as I'm pouring a coffee.

Or when I look out through my guest room's window and see a light snow sprinkle.

Yikes, I am traveling to Toronto on Wednesday; I better bring some long undies and super-warm socks! I mean, it's cold here in NYC, but not THAT cold!

Until you do the happy dance when the forecasted high temperature for the day is 32* (despite the fact that it doesn't actually get there) for the first time in over 3 weeks, it's not winter. If that hasn't happened yet, shut your mouth.

Snow in Socal: (or at least the Inland Empire, since I moved there in 2001)

11/21/2004: Woke up to a tempurature of 27 degrees in Temecula, snow falling, though it did disappear by late afternoon.
1/29/2002: During school, we were playing football. Temp was in the low 30s and all of a sudden, snow starts falling, but it doesn't stick.

Historical:
1967: My dad told me when he was nine, this one day, snow fell as he walked to school in San Diego.

Those are the only incidents I know of.

Where I live consistently gets nighttime lows in the 30s from November to February, highs in the 40s/50s in the day during December/January. Lots of frost, and of course, how does the average SoCal citizen dress for such temperatures?

Last year, on a 22 degree morning, half my school showed up in shorts!!!  Big grin

When I was in 1st grade in snowed where I lived in San Diego - 300ft elevation. Did not stick but it was cool to see that.

Last year they got snow in much of the IE. Temecula, Hemet, Sun City and other areas got snow!

It snowed my senior year of highschool for about 20 minutes or so, actually a pretty good down fall. It wasn't really snow though, more like slush.

I was six that year, living in Claremont (outside LA) in those days. I've got the pictures of our family in the front yard of our house in the snow as proof of snowfall that day.

Skip ahead to Christmas Day 2004: we got snow here in New Orleans that day; only the second time in my eighteen years here I'd seen snow. My daughters had a blast in it. Within three or four days I ended up at the clinic getting antibiotics for one of the worst colds I've ever had.

I can recall seeing snow fall in Southern California before.
It's not uncommon to get a few flurries in the foohills and valleys.
I remember snow falling a few minutes when I was in high school in Pasadena.
It came down right when school was letting out.

I hate winter.... it is official now.

The temp when I got into work was a balmy -2F (-19C for the rest of you). I believe that it the specific temperature, scientifically speaking, when your balls freeze off.
