Windows XP Question

Tue Dec 13, 2005 6:29 am

Hoping someone can help me here. Everytime I delete "my music" "my pictures" ect from the My Documents folder, they reappear. Is there a way to make them go away forever?

Same thing here. It seems Microsquish wants you to keep some things around. In a couple of cases, I tried to delate some crap and Windows told me it couldn't be done because that program was necessary to make something else work.

The easiest way to get rid of these damn folders:

1. boot your pc with a MS-DOS bootdisc
2. than type format c:
3. wait....wait....wait....

Its not easy to make these folders disappear forever - certain programs seem to recreate them if they arent there. But you can make windows stop recreating them just because they arent there.

You need to unregister the mydocs.dll file which handles these functions:

regsrv32 /u mydocs.dll

then you can delete the documents without any issues. If you then have problems with My Documents et al not working 100%, you can reregister the above file using:

regsrv32 mydocs.dll

which will restore the functions, but usually it wont result in a reoccurance of the directories.

Please note that I take no responsability for your system, you run the above commands at your own risk and they are provided with no guarantees on my part. In short, if they dont work, if they cause damage (they shouldnt), if they steal all your valuables, if they run off with your wife - I am not liable. K?

Thanks for the replys, but maybe I'll just keep hitting "delete" as I really don't want to f-up my computer. My luck I'll make the thing crash and lose everything.  Smile

You can get rid of the folders, but more and more applications are starting to expect them to be there. You might end up causing problems if you get rid of them entirely. You can also redirect "My Documents" to another folder as an alternative.

Whats the harm in letting the folders just sit there?

I have the folders there, but doesnt mean I use them. I have my own filing system and written my own software to keep track of it all.

Just ignore them is the easy solution.
