Rembering Goodyear And Firestone Christmas Albums

Tue Dec 13, 2005 7:23 am

One of the real regrets I have around Christmas is that, with the demise of vynal records and record players, no one has ever thought to release on CD's those great old Firestone or Goodyear Christmas albums that they put out for years. There was some truly great Christmas music on there-Andy Williams, The Vienna Boy Chior, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Sammy Davis, Jr. The greatest version of "The Lord's Prayer" that I ever heard, by Richard Tucker, was on one of those albums.

I'd buy a bunch of those if they were on CD now.

Such a pity.

Anyone else remember those albums?

Agreed!

I have two of those Goodyear Christmas albums at home.
Not sure which vol# it is but there are well over 20 of them.

Can you put them on CD, Superfly?

Hey, that'd be great! If you can let me know. I'll pay you for the cassettes you use. I could get them on CD from there.

Really?

Why not? If they're going to be mine, why foot the cost? I'll even reimburse you for shipping. Do it for me, and I'll write you a check for the cassettes and shipping.

Now, don't go buying the most expensive cassettes you can find, just to bilk me, dude.  Big grin

Sure I can do that for you. I have a bunch of blank cassette tape I can use.
I have some unopened Maxell high-bias 90 minute tape. I think it's XLII.
You an't gettin' any of my METAL bias type IV tape.  no
No worries about paying for the tape. Just spot me $3.50 for shipping.

My only concern is that my Goodyear Christmas albums aren't in excellent condition. They do have some surface noise but not a whole lot.
In terms of record condition, I'd give them a 'C'.

Jesus, you make it sound like I'm 116 or something!  Silly

I'm 44 years old, and as a kid, I grew up listening to those albums every Christmas. I loved them. One of my fondest memories of being young and of Christmas.

Most of those albums are available as we speak on E-bay, for just a couple of bucks per record.

Falcon 84, I can get you ten of them for less than $20 if you can approve my doing so within the next two hours...

I have a bunch of the albums myself, but no longer have a record player from which to record them. Haven't had one in years. About 12 years ago, my wife bought me about 6 of them at Goodwill, for like $1 a piece, but they're buried away somewhere, with other old albums, and they're really of no use anymore.

Some record company should reproduce them. I think they'd sell like hotcakes.

Many of those songs are on CD but not in the same compilation of the Goodyear releases.
I am leaving work now and I'll make you the tape when I get home.

ROTFL. Good one, but I think I'm right. A lot of people would love them. There is some wondeful music on those old recordings.

I believe my father had at least couple of them... 1960s vintage. They're probably still stacked in the basement of my mother's place; I could check when I'm there next week.

One album, titled Great Songs of Christmas (might have been a Firestone Album produced by Columbia Records) was the one album from that I remember the most from his collection. Side One started off with Andy Williams' It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year & Side Two (which had more the more traditional Christmas Carols) started off with Barbara Streisand (who'd had thought she ever sang a Christmas Hymn today) singing Oh Little Town of Bethlehem.
Partial (I don't have the album jacket w/me, so I'm going by memory) list of artists on that album included (no particular order):
Andy Williams
Ray Conniff Singers
Robert Goulett & Carol Lawrence
Sally Anne Howes
Percy Faith & his orchestra
Tony Bennett
Johnny Mathis
The Brothers Four
The NewChristy Minstrels

Most of my father's albums did not get as much play in my family as the Harry Simone Chorale Little Drummer Boy album compilation (my mother's favorite Christmas album) to which a reprinted album was purchased in 1988 (our 'tired' original album was bought in the early '60s); Like the fore-mentioned GSOC ablum, I made a cheap cassette copy in 1989. Last year, I was able to order a CD version of the album; though the cover art on the CD was not the original.
