There are ten houses on our cul de sac, and we really feel blessed to have such great friends on our street.
True, we are the token gay couple, but that has never been an issue.
We are all about the same age, mid-forties or so, some are a bit younger with children, but we socialize with all of them (except for the Vietnamese family who have made no effort with any of us, in fact when we send out our Christmas party invitation, they don't even bother to respond! Just plain rude, but may be a cultural thing.).
We tend to really help each other out when needed, and it is a very good feeling. During the blackout a few years ago we had a great BBQ, and since I had a gas stove, I was the one who was able to cook and make coffee!
As I am very handy with tools, I tend to get asked to help out with some basic home repairs, so I've seen everyone's house!!!
Twice a year we have a progressive dinner on our street, and during the summer we will often BBQ together.
We are closest we our direct neighbor and will often go out for dinner and drinks with her and her boyfriend.
We are also friendly with a few other people in our sub-division, and see them often as well.
I guess we are very, very lucky.
